A dangerous social media trend is raising concerns in Massachusetts. Police are warning residents about the so-called "Door Kick Challenge" after a series of incidents in Westborough. The trend involves people running up to homes and kicking front doors before fleeing, causing damage and frightening families.
New tonight, we're hearing from the victim of a TikTok trend.
Someone ran up to her door and nearly kicked it in.
Boston 25's Lisa Pappas shows us the damage done in Westborough.
And then right here it widens because this is where they kicked it.
They saw the footprints right about here.
Amy Dwyer shows us the damage to her doorway after someone kicked
her front door in last Saturday night around midnight.
She says it shook the whole house and woke her up from a deep sleep.
And on Sunday morning when I got up, I could see
daylight from around the door frame
and when I opened it pieces of the door jamb fell so they had
kicked the door so hard that basically it caused
the whole entire door jamb to splinter. And now
replacing this custom door will cost her about four thousand dollars.
From here to here is one
piece. Westboro police responded
and say this may be part of the social media trend known as the
door kick challenge. It's kind of like ding-dong ditch,
only more dangerous and sometimes leaving
serious damage. Westboro police say they've
received several calls from other homeowners
who had the same terrifying experience recently.
It's the startling factor. You know, somebody
knocks on your door and you're like, oh,
I'm going to go out of curiosity who's at my door.
But when literally half your house shakes,
it's a serious, you know, it's an emergency situation.
Police say it's not only dangerous for the homeowner,
but also for the kids who are doing
this not knowing how someone may respond to it
their kids i get their brains have not fully
developed yet but actions have consequences
and i don't think they're necessarily thinking about
what those consequences are or how far reaching they could
be and really how it can impact them
financially their parents financially criminally
Westborough police say they're still looking for
the people responsible for this and they could face criminal charges
on scene in Westborough
