CA Dems urge "No" vote on Prop 39

California's top Democrats joined at Laborers Local 261 in San Francisco's Mission District, urging Californians to get out the vote and specifically to vote no on Proposition 39. Opponents say it's a Donald Trump-backed measure aimed at making it harder to vote. They want to charge us hundreds of millions of dollars to make it happen. We can't let it happen. We won't let it happen. Am I right? The measure would require voters to put the last four digits of their Social Security number or a voter ID number on the envelope of their mail-in ballots and would require them to provide a government ID to vote in person. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said one of the impacts of Prop 39 would be to make it harder for women to vote, since many women take their husband's name. She said they would be required to go through extra steps to vote. They are putting up obstacles to participation to vote. And women, sisters out there, if you have your husband's name in marriage, you're going to have to go find your birth certificate in order to vote. Supporters of Proposition 39 have said in their social media that the measure is a bipartisan way to modernize voting. After signatures to put it on the ballot came from Democrats and Independents. With Prop 39, just show your license, a free voter ID, or use four digits from a government ID. And it keeps mail ballots, so voting stays easy. Governor Gavin Newsom said the measure is just one of the latest tools Donald Trump is using to undermine American democracy. We will lose our republic, we'll lose this country, unless we turn out in numbers and margins where he cannot contest this race. It's that foundational, that fundamental. A California Senate Elections Committee study found voter fraud is rare in the state, with just 10 cases confirmed in elections from 2020 through 2024.
