Well, imagine being stuck in an elevator and then discovering
your way out involves being hoisted almost 200 feet to safety.
These two women live that nightmare.
Shauntice Wilson takes us inside the dramatic rescue
and the moments the women trapped won't soon forget.
Two women tell a harrowing story about being trapped
in a casino elevator,
then learning that the only way out is being hoisted nearly 200 feet.
This video shows Sherry Hovan being pulled to safety.
She was the first to come up, followed by Darina Kudish.
I was frightened. Oh, I had to close my eyes. I was hysterical.
The ladies had been at the Borgata for a business conference,
left their rooms on the 42nd floor,
and were on the elevator going down to the casino floor.
I don't even know how many floors we sort of dropped.
It was like a sudden drop and like a bounce or something, right?
It happened around 5.30 yesterday afternoon.
They waited for help to arrive.
Initially, it was sort of fun and games
because we just thought, oh, 20 minutes.
We were shopping on Amazon, telling jokes to one another.
But she says a significant amount of time went by and they got nervous.
Then Rescue 1 Station 2 firefighter Brian Barrio came down through
the ceiling of the elevator.
all right, Kudish recorded this video
with her cell phone, I made the mistake too of looking up
and I was like whoa, the women
also say they were wearing heels taking directions on where to step
and how to move, he's explaining you're hooked
you're double hooked you're hooked to us you're
hooked to another line and we're safety and all that, yeah
and then he says, now I just want you to
swing or sway in the air and nervous going up
but he was going up like Spider-Man, Barrio says they
were in a blind shaft elevator making things more of a challenge
when an elevator has an opening, say
on the ground floor floor one
and then it doesn't have another opening until floor 32 so when the
elevator gets stuck in the middle that's
the blind shaft, there's no door openings or easy access for
them. A crew of nearly two dozen set up a lowering
and hauling system. And it's just a bunch of
little ants moving all at one time harmoniously.
I have to put a harness on them and then another
two harnesses. Make a little small talk,
ask them what they wanted for dinner, ask them what kind
of music they like, you know, what's your name,
where you're from, how you doing Sherry. Maybe
sing them a little song. Sherry, Sherry baby.
The entire process from setup to last rescue took
about three hours. It was about
an hour and a half, though, to rescue both
women. They take
real pride in their craft, and when they do
rescues like that, it gives all of us
a sense of pride. In Atlantic City,
