I'm in the woods again today with Scout.
I'm going to this lean-to I started building yesterday.
I just wanted to show you guys a little bit of the woods.
The lean-to is off in that direction.
I can see it with my eyes, but it's pretty camouflaged.
Here is that. I did a post a while back about
the Hardwoodsman's Birch Bark Substitute.
That's what this is.
So this is an oak here next to the maples.
All I would do is peel that stuff off,
and it almost looks like birch bark.
And then when it takes a spark, it takes
a ferro rod, you just have to crush it up.
When it takes a spark, it burns
for quite a while, and it's black smoke.
So there's got to be some oils in it similar to the birch bark.
I'm going to collect a bit, and I'll show you.
So yeah, I gathered quite a bit.
I got a handful,
and we'll crush it up and strike it with the ferro rod.
So back onto the shelter.
It's this way.
Can't see it through the camera
But it's right in front of me
Scout knows where he's going
Can you guys start to see it yet?
It's about 10 yards in front of me
It's a nice day today,
no bugs, it's not hot
It's ideal weather
So I put this up, I was out here for 6 hours yesterday
Just fooling around
And here's the shelter right here, Scout
I just thatched it with some maple leaves
It's just a pretty
I don't know, not the greatest job of thatching
But I didn't want to take down too many maples
and actually these maples that I took down
were growing sucker growth off of an old dead maple
so they weren't really going to last anyways
but there is the front of it and I made the raised bed
more Kasky style or Kasky I guess there's
the bed, there's the bed with my backpack on it
it's only not even a foot off the ground
but serves as a good seat inside the shelter and if
I did plan on spending the night
if I did plan on spending the night out here I
I would thatch it a little bit better,
but right now, I'd just like to have a place to sit down
and maybe have a fire.
I'm gonna cook a lunch out here.
It's a good way to spend a day, I guess.
Let's
go.
Right, so I got the oak,
the birch bark substitute.
Crush it all up
with powder.
I got my JLT bushcrafter with me today.
Ever since I got my Charlie, I've been neglecting this guy,
so I
thought
I'd
bring
him out.
All this work,
so I've done it before.
Punching through
my bark.
There
we go.
substitute and I plan on doing bow drill fire out here
so I don't have anything
really to catch, like I think I didn't
they didn't prepare my fire yet because
that's not how I want to do my fire
but I just want to show you guys and it
burns for quite a while there's some
of the sparks the ferro rod shavings on
there you know just
a quick vid showing you guys what I'm up to today anyways
alright thanks for watching
