James Hoffman, World News Report today.
Ladies and gentlemen, JPL has announced two space rocks
that are inbound for a close approach and flyby.
One in about 48 hours and the other next month.
Now we're going to go over the rock
that's inbound in what it says here on the 13th.
But it's really going to be late on the 12th here in the U.S.
First rock is 2026 EG1.
It is here. It was actually just picked up on the 8th,
and you can see how close it is to Earth.
And if we move from the 10th, which is today,
to the 11th, 12th, and 13th, well, they merge as one.
Now, this is supposed to fly between the Moon and Earth.
It's thought to be about 50 to 60 feet in diameter.
Not necessarily huge,
but rocks that size are known to do a lot of damage.
it is coming in at an inclination
although not a really heavy inclination it's moving at about 9.6
kilometers per second which is pretty fast again
this is 2026 EG1 inbound for late night
on the 12th although this does say the 13th i.e. UTC time
so this space rock or near Earth object
2026 EG1 was first spotted two days ago
on the 8th they've just released the information to the
public they've been the Jet Propulsion Laboratory
you can see right here March 10th they've just
released it like to pick these things up quickly
if they're going to be close to Earth and this
one is going to fly between Earth
and our moon here they've had a total of 71 observations which
seems like a lot although they have
a really high condition code here the condition code of seven is
not great news it means they don't feel like they have
the information they need nine means they
have no idea how big the rock
is or where it's headed zero means they know exactly how large it
is exactly where it's headed seven being much closer
to a nine than a zero as y'all can imagine
This rock was, of course, spotted by our ARI software,
Automatic, here, again, two days ago,
and they've released the information just now to the public.
And, again, this rock was, or is,
about 50 to 60 feet in diameter, we think,
but we have a really high-condition code here.
So this is kind of strange.
Regularly, when they have 71 observations,
they're able to extrapolate future and past flybys,
and you might have pages of flybys they don't have
that they just have what's going to happen
in the next 48 72 hours here they have the earth close approach
and the lunar close approach and
it looks like it's going to go right between the two
which means it will be thousands of miles away
hopefully although again the condition code is seven
so it's still all a guess you're looking
for it to come in march 13th at 3 27
which translates into about 10 27 p.m central time
on the 12th of march here in the u.s
so because this is utc time and we're going to move it to
conventional central time it's looking like it'll make
its close approach on the evening of the 12th
at 10 27 at night and it looks like it's moving
about 9.62 kilometers per second which is a pretty
good speed so that's our first worry right there happening
on the evening of the 12th i think we
should be fine although that condition code should bother you
that's 2026 EG1 50 60 feet in diameter
moving at 9.61 kilometers per second coming
in at a slight angle here
and i think uh we're gonna
move on to the second close flyby that's gonna
happen April 14th April 14th so about 33 days
from now now this is 2013 GM3 we
have covered this rock before uh
and it is an inner solar
system rock one day it'll definitely hit one
of these planets this rock is thought to be about 70
to 75 feet in diameter
so that is quite a bit larger there's no inclination it's just about
on the surface or on the same plane as most
of the planets uh this rock again is 2013 GM3
which means it was actually first seen discovered in 2013
and you can see that they've been keeping
an eye on it let's take a look
at this space rocker near earth object as far as the data
Alright, the solution date is back in 2021,
and looks like they haven't been messing with it much.
Last observed in 2013.
Guess this was an update.
Total observation days, 12 days, 61 total observations.
So this comes from extrapolated information.
You would think that they would pick the rock back up.
they must not be able to and give us some updated information
although we still have a few days
i.e. they think about August 14th
so we have to deal with this this has a high condition code as
well because 2013 GM3 is larger well they're
not quite sure how large it is nine means that they
have no idea how big it
is or where it's headed zero means they know exactly where it's headed
and how large it is and obviously seven is much closer
to nine than zero it was spotted by our
AI software of course automatic
and it doesn't look like they've picked it back up on this spin
so let's hope they do pick that up
and update some of this information you can see they've
extrapolated four pages of close flybys
this rock is eventually going to hit one of the
your solar system's planets
and across the fourth page here where we can see the close approach
April 14th, the Earth and Moon, this one's going
to be a little bit closer to the moon than Earth
as you can see here it's going to be very close
to the moon, let's hope it doesn't hit the moon here
point zero zero zero one which is probably about 50,000 miles
but condition code so high i.e. seven
well they need to get their eyes on this rock
and figure out where it's headed because it is
rather large if y'all remember the rock
that uh blew up over Russia a few years back was about
the same size as this rock, this rock doesn't have
a real inclination to it but it is thought to be
moving at about seven to eight kilometers per second
which is a good clip again supposed to
be coming a lot closer to the moon here as you can see than earth
but we'll be going between the two
now let's see what time this is going to be it's
going to be april 14th at 16 15 so 11 15 in the
morning central time on april 14th 11 15
in the morning central time on april 14th in summary we
have two decent sized space rocks meteors near earth objects
that will actually feed the
needle right between earth and the moon
and that's all going to happen on the evening of the 12th
and then on April 14th at about 11.30 in the morning.
So y'all stay prepared, eyes to the sky.
These things usually have friends with them in my past experience.
That's it. God bless you all.
