Horacio The First Catagory Five Cyclone Of 2026!

James Cotman, World News Report today. Horatio intensifies to 160 mph winds. The first Cat 5 of 2026 in our northern hemisphere. Tropical cyclone Horatio has intensified to the first Category 5 storm of 2026. And this is early, folks. Reaching peak strength Monday afternoon over the open waters for the southern Indian Ocean. According to forecasters, Horatio winds climbed to over 160 miles per hour for over 260 kilometers per hour on February 23rd as the powerful system churned east of Madagascar. Satellite imagery from NOAA, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Association, Colorado State University have captured the storm at its height, showing a well-defined and formidable cyclone spinning far from any populated land, but basically inbound. Atmospheric conditions with only one moderate wind shear allow the cyclone to organize and intensify, which is all true there. The U.S. Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center said Horatio has likely reached its maximum intensity forecast. Expect the storm to gradually weaken as it tracks southward, not into Madagascar, not into India, but southward into cooler waters. and encounter a stronger wind shear in the coming days because the storm remains over remote ocean waters and poses no threat to land at this time, though it could impact marine operations in the region. Horatio marks the earliest Category 5 cyclone since Cyclone Irial reached that level off the northwestern Australian coast in April of 2025. Historically, the planet averages just over five Category 5 storms per year, based on data from 1990 to 2025. That's expected to increase dramatically. Last year, we did see five such systems worldwide. But scientists say that we should look for six to seven Category 5 storms this year. We already have our first, and it's only February, right?
