Woman dies after following medical advice provided by ChatGPT,
the family of a 31-year-old Seattle woman
who died from a catastrophic seizure.
He's suing OpenAI after the woman followed medical advice from ChatGPT,
urging her to stop taking her epilepsy medication.
I doubt that's how it went down.
The Daily Wire reports that Bowen Wan had
been consulting Chet GPT in the weeks leading up to
her death about ways to wean herself off
her medication without her doctor's knowledge.
So, Chet GPT did not urge her to do anything.
She asked it how to do something, and there's
a big difference in the two.
Obviously, she should have consulted with her physician.
Juan had lived with epilepsy for more than a decade
and successfully managed it with
prescription medication.
However, after becoming concerned about
the side effects she was suffering, she turned
to ChatGPT 4.0 for advice on winning herself off the drugs,
according to reports.
The New York Times reported that Juan's chat logs show
that ChatGPT provided a week-by-week
To reduce her 400mg daily dose down to zero.
The lawsuit alleges that when Juan expressed distrust of her doctors,
the chatbot validated her and further praised
her for hiding the tapering plan
from her primary care provider, labeling it a solid avoidance strategy.
Well, that sounds pretty crazy to me.
According to the Daily Wire, days before her death,
she appeared to have a seizure while
on the phone with her father, and she later asked the bot,
maybe it's not a major issue.
The bot's response was supposedly,
there's no need to worry too much about your health.
Juan died in her Seattle apartment on February 20,
2006, and the official cause of death
was Sudden Unexpected Death and Epilepsy, or SUDEP.
The lawsuit that names OpenAI and CEO Sam Alton
alleges that the company bypassed built-in safety guardrails
and failed to prevent the AI
from dispensing unlicensed hazardous medical instructions.
OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri
Call the situation heartbroken and noted.
While chat GPT is not a substitute for medical care,
we believe AI can play a large role
in helping people make sense of their health information,
navigate insurance and complex health care systems,
and prepare for appointments with medical professionals.
This case will be very important
and should set a precedence for future similar situations.
ChatGPT did not force her to do a thing.
She approached the AI chatbot
and asked it about weaning from what we can tell here.
I guess we'd really have to see all
of the conversations before we can give any really valid opinions.
However, I agree this is a tragic situation for all involved.
We do need some safety rails on these open language AI models.
We should have seen something like this coming.
