What was hidden beneath a century -Old layer of grime? A complete, start-to-finish restoration of a painting

October 26, 2026 | MOSCOW
A great deal of work has been done, and I’d love to share it with you! ✨
This is one of the most striking results I’ve achieved in my practice. Looking at the photo on the left, it might seem as though the portrait was beyond saving: dull, faded colors, a network of cracks, and a warped canvas—not to mention a dilapidated stretcher frame and decades of deeply ingrained dirt on the reverse side.
Yet, hidden beneath these marks of time lay a stunning piece of art, revealing a noble profile and a profound, expressive gaze.
What was done:
• A full restoration of the support structure, including replacing the worn-out stretcher frame with a new one (take a look at the second photo—the back is now secure and neatly finished).
• Meticulous consolidation of the ground (gesso) and the paint layer.
• Removal of yellowed grime and delicate, precise inpainting in areas where the original paint had been lost.
• The painting’s frame was also restored to its proper condition. ☺️
Every time a painting is given a second life, I feel an incredible sense of pride. It’s as if I’m erasing the boundaries of time, allowing the portrait to speak once again with its original voice. ✨

Ivan the restorer demonstrates the comprehensive process of restoring a 19th-century portrait of a transport engineer. The project covers the technical stages of restoration in detail, including canvas consolidation, cleaning of the paint layer, lining (reinforcing the support), filling in losses in the ground layer, professional inpainting, and the restoration of the original frame.
