Clark Atlanta students are fighting for change
at an intersection where one of their own died.
A car crash on Hank Aaron Drive near Center Park Stadium
killed 21-year-old Morgan Gamble back on October the 11th.
Fox 5's Larry Spruill joins us from the live desk.
Larry, you spoke to students about the initiative.
Good evening, Tom. They started a petition
to bring safety changes to that intersection on Hank Aaron Drive.
It's a very busy area and students tell me something has to change.
Man, we are a community that is grieving.
Grieving and hurt, says Clark Atlanta University student Caleb Motley.
Life has taken a drastic turn.
We lost a dear friend, a great confidant, a great person.
Motley is talking about his friend, 21-year-old Morgan Gamble.
She was killed in a car crash on Hank Aaron Drive
and Glen Street October the 11th.
Police charged Nikolai Dunford for first-degree homicide by vehicle.
Investigators say he was driving too fast
in the area before hitting Gamble's car.
Currently on that corner, there are two stops.
There's one coming from northbound and one coming from southbound.
But there's no stoppage coming from east and west.
Motley tells me that's why they are fighting for change.
They recently started this petition
for more safety precautions at the intersection.
It has almost 2,000 signatures.
I think we would love to see a four-way stop.
I don't think a traffic light is necessary
because there is a big traffic stop right up
right not too far from it but maybe if there's a four-way stop
then that kind of eases maybe we
even get some speed bumps you know
because there's a lot of pedestrians. This is the intersection
where that accident happened
and students tell me it's very dangerous. I want to show you why
they say that if you are right here
and you want to make a left-hand turn you can't see traffic
coming it's truly about the safety.
As for what's next, we're going to continue to get this petition
signed, continue to get it pushed.
You know, we want to stretch it across the nation. And I also
reached out to the Georgia Department
of Transportation about this initiative. I have not
heard back just yet, but of course,
if you want to sign that petition, you can. It's on our website,
fox5atlanta.com. We're live at the live desk.
I'm Larry Sproul, Fox 5 News. All right, Larry,
We'll see if they make that change. Thanks.
