While the Milwaukee Brewers
and the Rays are looking to win their first World Series,
another team from the city claimed that title first,
the Milwaukee Braves in 1957.
It's been a minute, but Brett Lemoine spoke
with the outfielder, John DeMeritt,
who's in Port Washington.
The 90-year-old reflected on his time with the Braves
and the moment his team won the World Series.
What was that moment like for you?
It was pretty exciting.
Way beyond any experience I've ever had before, obviously.
And you have some really special memories of just being with him,
not only on the field, but off the field, too,
in terms of, like, Hank Aaron, for example.
I understand you carpooled with him quite often.
Yeah, for, that was, I think, in 61, I was here for the whole year.
I'd hook a ride with him once in a while when my wife was going
to be tied up doing something else and couldn't drive me or whatever.
So, go to Mech One and hop in his car and we'd go.
So, you know, you think nothing of it.
As you look back, it's a different matter.
Sure.
Good guy.
Never had any problem with him.
He was still pretty young, too, really.
He was only a few years older than I am.
Do you have any predictions?
Do you think this is going to be a sweep?
Do you think we'll be done at game four?
I think I'm thinking game five.
You think tonight is a night for Tampa, you think,
just because they've got the home field advantage now?
Yeah, I think the first time around,
that is a little bit more of an advantage.
But inevitability is there also.
You know, this is a pretty good team, too.
They should win some games, just hopefully less.
Yeah, yeah.
But I would say five games.
This team, this year, is spectacular.
What have they done that you think has
been kind of the standout moment?
Well, they sure had an attitude about sticking together,
following our lead,
doing the things that we talked about doing for the game.
Attitude is everything.
DeMeritt believes he's one of the oldest living baseball players
who played in a World Series.
He says he's visited the monument to the Braves
at American Family Field and thinks fondly of his time with the Braves.
