The family of a woman shot
in a road rage incident is praying for a miracle.
She's in the ICU at Mount Sinai Hospital.
That's where Joni Lum is live tonight
after talking to this woman's sister.
Hey, Joni.
Lauren, Rosa Hernandez just had surgery here at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Her family says she is not improving, but she is not getting worse.
Her family says that she is the provider for her five children,
and they just cannot believe this is happening.
32-year-old Rosa Hernandez was riding in a car
with her two youngest children, a 5-year-old and 2-year-old.
Her boyfriend was driving through Brighton Park.
This was last Thursday morning.
At 47th and Western, a gray sedan pulled up.
Someone shot her in the head.
Cameras caught evidence of a road rage altercation before the shooting.
And there may be video of the suspect's car.
Rosa's family is now raising money to care for her children,
ages 2 through 17.
She's in critical condition. The only thing we could say
is that she has a really bad damage on her brain.
She's still not responding. They have her medically sleeping
in the coma just for her safety, I guess,
and to see how her body's reacting to the surgery she just came out of.
Early we found out she was having a fever,
so it's a really hard situation.
Well, her sister, Sonia Hernandez, says if she does awaken
from that coma, she's going to have serious deficits.
Police have not reported any new information in the investigation, but
the boyfriend reportedly is helping them to try to find the shooter.
Reporting live at Mount Sinai Hospital, I'm Joni Lum, Fox Chicago.
Joni, thank you.
