The Padres Make a Major Statement...
1 Video View·Oct 27, 2026
This has serious implications for the Padres,
both in the short and long term.
I want to talk about something that A.J. Preller came out and said
and then tie that into the bigger picture
of the changing franchise under the new ownership.
Big things to talk about.
What's going on, everybody?
Christian Pedersen back with another episode of Padres
Digest, the show where Andrew and I are bringing you guys daily content
all off-season long, even if that means having to grit our teeth
and watch this dang World Series,
knowing that could have beat them Brewers,
should have beat them Brewers, would have beat them Brewers
that one ball and right okay i'm sorry i'm sorry
zen positive pete all off season my apologies

the big headlines that i saw of AJ Preller making a
clear and concise statement about Fernando Tatis
and Manny Machado that being that he was talking
to reporters and saying no they are not getting traded they
are the founders of our team machado
and tatis are padres for life
and every change for the organ everything changed for the organization
when we signed machado and when tatis came
to the big leagues we never think about trading them i
um okay great fantastic lot to unpack
from this my first thing would be i don't believe that they've
never thought about trading them maybe just even
like one point one one one one one percent sure
okay but uh great if the thought is that they're never going
to trade them i'm here for it i am
here for it in a big kind of way
because these guys are and i don't want to pretend that they
are 100 percent universally liked by every one of you
in the comment section i think significantly more of
you guys like uh fernando tatis jr than manny machado
but i they divide us they were uh tatis
trade last year that discussion was a lot around
when he wasn't hitting should we send him to
somewhere where he can just get a fresh start we can get
a bunch of draft picks then the team got
hot and like we are a really good team
when both of them are hitting that cubs series was us seeing
exactly what this thing can be in the playoffs
and so if the core is look these guys are the
backbone of this generation
and they are going to be Padres for life i dig it i think it is
interesting though to have that overlap with new ownership
because there is to me always no matter
how good a group of dudes is um personality
or talent wise or you know or how much they're loved
by a city there's always some element of them being
the other guys you know the other ownerships
team and Kwanzaa and Jose Feliciano are you know coming
in at a right time where they get to sample
an amazing like they obviously were like here
and in like they didn't just blindly buy the
Padres on a whim one day
and be oblivious to the bad start to the season but they showed up and
were actually in the building as the owners
in an amazing end of the season spurt and into a
playoffs where they i was there they saw
a very packed San Diego city to see what Manny and
Fernando can do so i think then it dovetails
into the statement that they released a couple of days
ago that i'm sure most if not all of you have um have seen
and it's a long one but it basically
this just talks about how they're grateful
the the last line is really what i'm after here is
that they respect the history and they're
grateful for the foundation that
Peter Seidler and so many others built for the Padres.
And you can go,
you can pause this or I'll leave it here in the corner.
If you guys want to read it all,
if you have not yet,
but I get the vibes that they
are largely interested in building off of and
not rebuilding this lineup.
But that being said,
it to me is okay.
If there's no trade on those guys and you're interested in building,
what do you do then are you talking about
are they gonna just go out and make moves arbitrarily
for the sake of moves, even if Tarik Skubal
is not really worth 200 gazillion dollars does
he get 200 gazillion and and Mori Hone gets a billion
and are these guys going to be splashes
and big spends just for the sake of big spends are they going to hold
and let everything just kind
to sit and simmer are they going to be savvy investors
in the margins are they going to get
rid of AJ Preller because uh you know
if you can't make any moves with Tatis and Machado and Bogarts
and all those guys maybe that's the chain it does beg
the question of what is really the moves um
this one these are some quotes from a uh couple
of weeks earlier from them said they're all in
they meant it we mean it now all in our people all
in our winning all in San Diego and beyond you
deserve more than words it deserves action
and i think that you can you can do action in the right
direction you can do action in the wrong direction you can
do action that is just spinning your
wheels and churning for nothing to be accomplished
and so if we are going to hold steady on the
long-term contracts that are here
and if they're going to say that hey we see Peter's vision but
if they're also then going to get hit with a potential
for a salary cap either be it hard or
soft and other labor restrictions that don't allow them
to just be um oh we're going to spend
a literal billion dollars worth of deferred like
if if this was five years ago and they came in and
bought Seidler's team i would have said okay holy hell we're about
to go on a run where they're just
going to sign everybody
and spend all this money to be true not just competitive but truly like
elite elite and just go for it um but i i will
be curious now if we are definitively holding on to
some of these guys to be career Padres
because i don't think AJ Preller's quote was to shut this
down of like oh no we're not trading them right now
but we could be open to in the future they're
saying that we're going to hold on to these guys to the bitter end
and that means ever increasing
salaries for those guys
and contracts that are going to end up being major albatrosses around
our necks and a need to find winning potentially
in the really smart margins so i'm curious where
those moves start to happen
and when those moves start to happen because we keep having
a depleted farm system we keep having shortcomings
of like we get all this headline top of the top
like major talent and then we have Austin Hayes grounding
into game-ending double plays and it's
like well that sucks 170 games
into the season we're dependent upon Austin bleeping Hayes we're
dependent upon our bullpen running out
of of guys we're dependent on like we just seem to always be
like a little bit short and i just don't know
if you can accomplish that by um big big spending
so i gotta see what these actions are going
to actually be and maybe these actions are different
coaches and different leadership and different scouting
and different stuff that we're not going
to initially inherently appreciate as like oh
that was really savvy um i think this was an
interesting quote in the realm of this from Joe Musgrove
um they've got our full support and we
know that we're all there
while we're all about winning he said of the new owners so we expect
some moves in the offseason to revamp the group get
the pieces that we need make another run at
it so player support for them we've had some other quotes come out
from Tatis and Machado just that
they like the guys that they're gonna they understand
that help is on the way curious to
see what these moves are gonna be and i think
that it's good i'm optimistic there's a lot of
potential here but i don't want to see moves just
for the sake of splashes i don't want to see oh
we went out and signed uh you know a 37 year old dh
and a 35 year old starting pitcher and we gave
Michael King and Nick Pavetta
and Wandy Peralta all this cash to lock them up for career i i don't
need to see that i need to see really intelligent savvy moves i think
the window's open for like two
or three more really solid years before we start
to have to talk about like moving Manny to first
and some other sort of like just you know tread water
to extend careers for their value type of
moves um but that being said a couple of years go
this is all going to start happening very very
quickly even with the potential
for labor negotiations dragging into uh lockout and all
that kind of stuff i still think that post
the World Series in the Brewers in four um so the
World Series is going to be done in about
a week we're going to see some moves i think happen
really quickly after that for the Padres whether
it's internal re-signings or external signings i
just think that like we're real close to starting to see this action
so very curious to see exactly
what it is very excited hope you guys
are as well let me know what your thoughts are until next time
we'll talk to you soon
