AI GeneratedThe Boston Red Sox have named young prospect Christian Campbell to their opening day roster, signaling his role as the team's new everyday second baseman. Despite a struggling batting average in spring training, Campbell's defensive versatility and right-handed bat provide critical balance to a lineup that was previously too left-handed heavy.
We have some major updates on the Red Sox organization
and specifically who the second
baseman is going to be once opening day arrives just three days away.
I'm here to break down how the young prospect
Christian Campbell being named to the opening
day roster could allude to him being
the new second baseman in Boston and how that could
greatly help this Red Sox organization going forward.
We'll break down all of that on this episode of Red Sox Digest.

So again, thank you guys for everything.
But now let's get to it and break down not only this major update,
but how Christian Campbell has been named to the opening day roster.
And really how that is going to really propel
and help this Red Sox team going forward throughout this season.
Now we'll first start with the announcement
that came from Ari Alexander first on Twitter
as he goes on to say source Christian Campbell has
been informed he's made the opening day roster for the Red Sox.
Now that in itself is huge news.
We watched him throughout the entirety of spring whether he's playing
second base or playing left field he showed great versatility
in the field but not a great bat offensively overall as if we look
at the numbers they were not great for young Christian Campbell.
He only batted 167 for the entirety of spring and over 40 at-bats, 48
to be exact, which is not really what you're looking for offensively.
But the glove defensively has been pretty damn good,
as well as the versatility that he brings.
Again, like we mentioned earlier, a lot of reps not only
at second base, but also an ample amount in left field,
something that this Red Sox team could greatly use, as they have
a lot of different players who do have a lot of different versatility
that allows them to really be
ambidextrous, if you will,
defensively, which could be a plus
if the defensive level remains
at par, if not just above.
So again, a lot of different factors
going into this. Now, one of the biggest
things we are going to discuss about
the addition to the opening day
roster of Christian Campbell is the fact
that the lineup now looks as
follows. Now, this is from FanGraphs
and again, we've looked at this before
during the springtime and it looks
a bit different now and the main reason is
the fact that Christian Campbell was labeled
as the second baseman, batting in the sixth hole.
Going into this spring, or going into this offseason,
I should say, the Red Sox labeled
two main things as their point of attack of the offseason.
One was to add pitching, add more
pitching not only to the starting rotation,
but as well as to the bullpen. And the second biggest
pinpointed factor was also to balance out the lineup.
Those two of the main conversations
all offseason. The Red Sox did a damn good job of doing so,
and they didn't go out and acquire
a bunch of different right-handed bats,
but they went out and got Alex Bregman, a substantial
right-handed bat, one with great defensive versatility.
The conversation when first
acquiring Bregman was, is he going to play second
or is he going to play third? Once we realized
Rafael Devers, after throwing a little bit
of a tantrum about third base, was going to move to DH,
We knew Bregman was then going to be the third baseman,
opening up the second base competition for Hamilton, Campbell,
as well as Grissom, who has obviously been demoted to AAA.
But then we have the conversation of, well, if Hamilton's
our everyday second baseman, that's another left-handed bat.
With Campbell's defensive versatility and what he has shown
at second base defensively, it seems like he has gotten the nod
and will be the everyday second baseman for the Red Sox.
allowing this lineup to be very balanced.
Last year, if you guys remember,
we were extremely, extremely left-handed heavy.
If you look at it now, four lefties,
two five righties for this Red Sox lineup,
it's extremely balanced, especially compared to last season's lineup,
which is a huge plus for the Red Sox.
And when you look at the review of the offseason, again,
they went out and acquired Bregman, a right-handed bat,
and they were able to pull up a prospect in Campbell,
who's another right-handed bat,
to balance out this lineup, and again,
we're not even going to address the pitching and how well
they did this offseason,
particularly adding to the starting rotation, so again, check mark,
check mark for the Red Sox organization,
and now we just have to see how this is actually going to
work on the big stage, and I'm here to tell you,
I'm a believer in this lineup. Last year, the Red
Sox ranked ninth in total offense throughout the entirety of the MLB,
now adding someone like Alex
Bregman having Tristan Casas back healthy Trevor
Story back healthy players like Campbell now on
the opening day roster I believe in this Red Sox team greatly
and I also think that the defensive
capabilities are going to be great
and I think they are going to be better defensively than they
were last year which again is another improvement from last year
and I think this team is going to
have a very very good chance to be very very good
at baseball throughout the entirety of the MLB
Now, a few things we're going to point out is the fact Marcello
Meyer has been demoted to AAA and will start the year in AAA.
I said this earlier in the Trevor Story video.
I think if Story goes down with any form of injury for any stretch
of time, Meyer will be the guy called up and really used at shortstop.
I think what we saw offensively as well as defensively through
spring has really shaped what we expect from Meyer going forward.
I think Alex Cora, as well as the other guys
in the Red Sox organization, really have taken that into account
and believe in these young prospects, and I really, really
do expect him to get some playing time this upcoming season.
I know there was a conversation about him
possibly playing second base for the Red Sox.
It didn't seem like there was really much of a chance because,
again, the reps were so, so minimized compared
to someone like Christian Campbell, who got the vast majority of them
when he was active and on the field, compared to someone like Meyer.
But again, using David Hamilton as a utility guy is going to be a great
help when facing right-handed bats and just needing a pinch runner,
if you will, as he's going to be able to get around the bases
and steal bags for this Red Sox team, which is going to be a huge plus.
Now, for the offensive production for Campbell during spring,
I understand he only batted 197, or excuse me, 167,
and he did not do a lot offensively, but the defense in the versus
is going to be substantial for this Boston Red Sox team.
We're all over the place. What is going on? Here we go. Back to it.
I'm now going to play the defensive highlights from Christian Campbell
at second base from just two games ago against the Tampa Bay Rays,
where he made an elite level stop at second on a short line drive.
That's going to be caught,
a live shot and a diving grab by Christian Campbell.
Campbell really flexing the leather there as,
again, getting dirty for that diving catch,
which would have ended up being at least two bases
as it looked like it was going into the gap.
Campbell, again, just doing his job,
really highlighting the glove in what he has.
And as well as that, he has shown some abilities at the plate.
I know the average is not great.
It's not really what you're looking for.
but again it is spring let him find a groove
and let him start hitting home runs like the one as
follows you know a small school for a long time there's a 2-1 pitch
and campbell hits this one
a long way to the opposite field
and that ball is gone christian campbell a home run christian
campbell going oppo there on a pitch up in a way righty righty matchup
and the ability to poke it
to right field substantial something that we like
to see from these young prospects not being afraid
to use the entire field so it just there
are big big pluses to Christian Campbell and I know the
average is not one of them but the ability
to balance out the lineup is massive the ability
to then be better defensively overall as a team is going to be massive
and again allowing a young
prospect to grow around other professional
athletes other professional ball players and
not other triple-a double-a guys is going to really mold this guy
and mold Christian Campbell
to be a very very good ball player
and even better than he is now I think players like Alex Bregman
as well as Trevor Story are going to be huge pieces
to really molding Campbell and bringing
him into an all pro type of player
and just an all just a very mature when I say all pro I mean
a matured player someone
who knows how to be a professional athlete not only statistically and
being a good offensive and defensive player
but handling himself off the field how to train how
to eat right, how to keep the nutrition at a high level,
take care of the body, preserve
the body, be able to play for a long time.
I think that's something he's going to be able to absorb
and really gain from playing
alongside these other professional athletes.
Let me know down below what you guys think
about Christian Campbell making the opening
day roster for the Boston Red Sox,
and we'll see you guys on the next one.
