Police investigating after a group
of thieves stole about 3,000 pounds of frozen snow crab
from a tractor trailer. This is the news at five.
I'm Sheba Russell. Cargo thefts in the city have
become as common as the Eagles losing these days.
Some truck drivers are aware, others not so much.
So Kelly, what happened in this latest case?
Well, Sheba, police say they cannot definitively
link this case to any others,
but it is still early in the investigation. They are still
working to gather surveillance video police say
in this case the driver told them at least
six people were behind the heist
and they drove off in at least two vehicles
usually we get back sleep
in the morning we have our hour reset and we out
Willie drives and owns CN Willie Transport LLC
and says this is the precaution he now takes
when parking his truck for an extended period
in Philadelphia he says over the past four years he
had several instances of people trying to break in.
I usually disconnect my trailer from the truck
and then drop my trailer and then back up my truck
and then pull up behind the trailer so that I can
block the thief from, you know,
breaking into the trailer. You see right here,
they break into this truck like three times.
And it was here on the 3400 block of Island Avenue
where Philadelphia police say a group targeted
a truck carrying seafood for a delivery at Ocean
Kingdom this morning. Police say the driver pulled over
to sleep before the scheduled drop-off
and woke up at 3.30 a.m. to movement in the back.
At that time, he observed six individuals who
he encountered with their faces covered,
stealing cases of snow crabs out the back of the trailer.
He confronts those individuals.
Those individuals then flee the area into multiple vehicles. Police
say the group made off with two pallets of frozen snow crab,
each containing 50 boxes,
a total of roughly 3,000 pounds.
Southwest detectives say they had
a similar case back on March 31st on Island Avenue
where a crew stole 500 pounds of snow crab and left in two vehicles.
And earlier this month, Northeast detectives say
three people stole several pallets of ground beef
from a tractor trailer overnight on South Hampton Road.
I mean, they're all concerning, obviously,
but right now it's really too early to tell
if it's connected to anything.
We are in constant communication
with the captain of Northeast detectives,
our major crimes and as well as our federal partners.
Fortunately, Willie says no one
touched his truck overnight,
but he says he will continue to be cautious. Right now I'm worried
because yeah, I've never had, you know,
such news since I've been parking it, but I always take
precaution. But it's just unfortunate that,
you know, he gets his rest. He's right by where he
needs to be and these individuals break into it.
Thankfully, I mean, the bigger thing is that
the snow crabs can be replaced. Thankfully, this driver's safe.
That's the most important thing.
Police say they did recover some evidence,
but would not elaborate on exactly what that was.
They believe the men jumped into a gray Ford F-150 pickup truck
and gray Dodge Caravan. If
you have any information,
you're asked to call Southwest Detectives or call 215-686-TIPS.
Sheba. All right, Kelly, thank you.
