The retired NYPD detective accused of shooting
and killing a man on the George Washington Bridge
is now facing murder charges.
That's right. Jessica Fromoso joins us
with more on the grand jury indictment.
Jessica, what are you learning this morning?
Good morning, Dan and Rosanna.
62-year-old Victor Romero was indicted by a grand jury yesterday.
He is now charged with second-degree murder.
Last week, the Manhattan District Attorney's Office had downgraded
the murder charge to manslaughter.
A source within the DA's office tells Fox 5
the charges were upgraded due to new evidence.
This as we got our first look at the man accused
of killing the Con Edison worker.
The retired NYPD detective made
his first public appearance since his arrest last week.
This is Romero as he walked into court Tuesday.
People shouted murderer, but Romero said nothing
and seemed to avoid eye contact with the family of Caron Irvin
and the dozens of Con Edison workers who were present.
The 62-year-old was surrounded by bodyguards
as he arrived at the criminal courthouse.
The court proceedings lasting just a few minutes before he walked out.
Romero remains free on a $1 million bail he posted on Friday.
It was last week the Manhattan District Attorney's
Office had downgraded the murder charge to manslaughter,
shocking and angering Irvin's family and friends
who held a rally outside of court yesterday demanding justice
for the husband and father of two.
The NYPD tells Fox 5 Romero has not received any special treatment
from the department because he is a former cop.
But Irvin's family says otherwise, claiming Romero is being protected.
This is not a human thing.
Could have been anybody.
And Romero was above the law.
You are not above the law.
You are my brother.
A hundred percent.
And let me tell you something.
To have your whole identity wiped off
the internet in that professional manner,
You could Google this man's name and not get a picture of him.
I could Google my cat and get 20 pictures.
I can't understand who did that for him and how they did it for him.
It was last Tuesday during the evening rush hour that police say Romero
and Irvin nearly collided in their cars
on the George Washington Bridge.
According to the indictment, Romero, who was driving
his company's Range Rover, aggressively tailgated Irvin's
car before pulling alongside and allegedly firing his gun, killing
the 46-year-old Con Edison worker who was heading home from work.
Romero now is due back in court on November 23rd.
Rosanna.
OK, thank you so much.
