We
are
here
at
Animal
Actors on
location,
probably
when
the
little
light
bulb
goes
off.
Not just for the animals, but also for us as trainers.
Animal training really is a language.
It's problem solving and figuring out puzzles.
So when that light bulb goes off, it's really rewarding.
My personal favorite animal to work
with is our two St. Bernards, Oakley and Maggie.
They're each so different, so they teach me a lot about training
and they're just a joy to be around.
The favorite animal that I have here
and that I've ever worked with are the birds of prey.
I just really, really enjoy them.
One of the best parts of my job is rescuing animals from shelters.
We have rescued a bunch of animals here.
It's really rewarding to go out to shelters and give
those animals a second, third, fourth, maybe even fifth chance.
I would say the most important quality
to be an animal trainer is patience and persistence.
I think communication is the most important,
not only with our animals here, but with our staff.
I think something that's intuitive.
It's very important to be able to have that instinct of,
oh, I like this, I'm going to give them a treat for that.
Being a hard worker is really important.
I think the most important quality you have
to have is perseverance and dedication.
Animal training is hard work.
The best part of my job is being able
to see the animals out in the world.
I like being able to see a TV show, a movie,
a commercial and say, I know that guy. I work with him.
I've always known that I wanted to work with animals.
I, as I said, it's in my blood. It's who I am.
Animal actors, this is your stage
manager speaking. We need
a cleanup on the animal actors.
Please
put
your
hands
together
and
stage
one
of
these
top
trainers,
your
host.
And
now
you
press
the
dog.
Here comes our next star.
You can see him in 911.
The techniques that every good dog needs to know, train them in the mark.
Just like human actors have to hit marks on a scene.
Your animal star.
That was a great stay.
Good boy.
All right, go mark.
Good job.
Stay.
Good.
And after they learn that mark,
you can train them the basics, like catching treats, which
we're still working on.
Back up.
Stay. That's it. Feet. Wave.
Wave. Good wave. Very nice.
Lie down. Sit. Lie down. Head down.
That's a good head down.
Head down. Good boy.
Try again. Lay down. Down.
And he's getting himself out of trouble by looking really cute.
Good job, buddy. Okay, show them what you do.
How do you get out of trouble?
What do you do? Hide your eyes. Hide them.
You can do it. Hide your eyes. Good boy.
bit more complicated but i'll need the help of a um volunteer somebody
who loves dogs how about you
in the purplish blue t-shirt right there
from where where's
that in this scene here comes your
canine costar training
techniques the work away
the work away gets
its name for the dog
it's going to be working while facing away from the trainer
so to set that up i'll start by
placing one of Rodney's favorite treats right there
on the ground for him to focus on
I'm going to be moving behind
Only verbal cues.
This is a work away
Rodney
watch.
Lie down.
Okay, I'm going to do that one
Rodney's not supposed to take that treat until I say the word
When he's learning to be truthful a little bit, he gets extra snacks
Okay, this is a work away
Take two
Sit
Good.
Watch it.
Lie down.
On your feet.
Back up.
Back.
Back.
Wave.
Wave again
Wave
Sit.
Lie down.
Rodney's been cast in a movie where he's going
to be playing an injured dog looking for you.
And we've got this, so he's going to crawl over to you
and then when he gets to you
he'll get the strength to leap into your lap
and give you a great big doggie kiss right
on the lips.
Just open your arms, get ready to catch him, he's about 95 pounds
Quiet on the set, cameras rolling, take one, and action
He's been injured, but he's going to crawl
Here
for
a
second.
So
cute
together.
Isabelle, we forgot to give you that movie star kiss,
so we're going to bring Greta out
here.
Greta is from the movie Strays
and she absolutely loves giving big doggie kisses
Hi sweet girl. Go ahead and give her a kiss. Give her a kiss
to be back at the stadium
and everybody please
remain seated
because flying in from
the Universal Films,

And she's got something.
She dropped it.

The
bird

Now
instead,

that dry you guys can pick it off in about 30 minutes okay
Okay, we're going to try this one more time with two hands out.
We're going to give her two targets, this way she can't miss.
But I do need some help with my whistling.
Everybody whistle.
This guy
is a
lamb,
it's a
vulture.
Here we go.
We have
ever had on
this stage.
We're going to bring her on out here
to show you a brand new training technique.
You can see her in straight.
What are you guys doing out here?
That's not cool.
Frank is out. That's not good.
Hey guys, Frank is out backstage. Give me one second, folks.
Hello, anybody? Frank is out. Frank's out.
Looks like we're running into a little bit
of technical difficulties. Not to worry.
Our next animal star, what? Sounds like you said
porcupine. Oh, that's not good, guys.
