We've seen plenty of video from last week's severe weather,
but this one behind us stands
out. As wind and hail slammed the valley,
some bank employees stepped in to help a local food
vendor get out of the storm. Yeah, that video has gone viral.
And our Jacob Luthi is live. And
Jacob, you spoke with the vendor about that moment of kindness.
Yeah, Ellen, Mark, we absolutely did.
Actually, we were here earlier today driving around looking for him,
hoping that we'd stumble
upon him so that we might be able to talk.
We found him where he is almost daily right
here on Peoria Avenue. The bank right here behind me
is one of his stops. He says that
the employees here have been customers for years.
So when that storm hit and he was looking
for some help, he knew they'd be here.
Caught in the storm. Video posted to social
media by someone inside this PNC bank in Phoenix shows
an employee springing into action, helping
Hilario Cruz Cruz and his customized food cart get out
of the hail and into safety.
With one hand, I held the door against
the strong wind blowing it, and with my other hand,
I pulled the cart inside. The young man was doing the same on his side.
If I had been anywhere else,
maybe they wouldn't have been able to help me like that.
A week after the storm, we caught up
with Hilario on Peoria Avenue just off I-17.
He covers about 20 miles on his route, making stops
to sell elotes and fresh fruit, all prepped by hand,
starting around one in the morning. The
people who came to his rescue, they weren't strangers.
The bank employees had been his
customers for years, so when the storm hit,
he knew he could count on them.
They said, he's not going anywhere else.
He stays here, and we're bringing the cart inside.
I said, it won't fit. But the manager said, I know it will.
Even after the storm passed, Hilario's trek wasn't over.
He says his clothes were soaked,
his feet were cold, and he had to navigate down trees
and branches to get home.
but the next day it was back to work.
And he says he's grateful to be back among the familiar faces
who helped him when he needed it most.
I deeply appreciate my long-term customers.
That's why they didn't leave me outside.
I am profoundly grateful to the bank manager
and employees because thanks to them, nothing bad happened to me.
Now that video has over a million views
on TikTok with hundreds of thousands of likes.
Hilario says that business has
been booming ever since it's been posted.
