The Britain's King Charles III on Tuesday addressed
a youth gathering at Clifford Park in Nassau,
recalling the Bahamas' independence celebration in 1973
and highlighting the country's cultural achievements
and vulnerability to climate change.
Charles urged young people to play their part
in building truly sustainable futures.
For more than 50 years,
I have tried through various initiatives and organizations
to assist young people across the Commonwealth,
including here in the Bahamas,
to innovate, to prosper and to thrive,
and to do so in harmony with nature on which each one of us depends.
So today I can only invite you to take up
the sacred task to play your part
in the way that you build for yourselves
and your own descendants truly sustainable futures,
In the way you hold steady sunward, you have the chance
to show the world how it truly is better in the Bahamas.
The King further acknowledged the great suffering
and injustice of the past in the Bahamas and beyond,
saying it was a right to acknowledge them
while building new opportunities for the future.
He also highlighted the threat of climate change,
noting that 90% of the land in the island nation sits below 2 meters.
