Welcome back. Police say Deja Coleman dropped
her other two kids off at daycare,
but left her son Daniel in her car where he died
while she went to work. Fox says Ray Adena was
in the courtroom when Coleman made the request
to spend Halloween with her other children.
And he joins us live from the Gwinnett
County Courthouse in Lawrenceville.
Ray, what did that judge have to say?
Well, Alex, Deja Coleman went back to court after
her attorney sought to modify or clarify her bond.
And ultimately, the judge says that she
can go trick-or-treating with her children inside of her complex.
Now Coleman who is out on bond
and wearing an ankle monitor appeared
in a Gwinnett County courtroom this morning alongside
her attorney Trinity Hundredmark
and prosecutors argued that Coleman who faces charges of second
degree murder and cruelty to children for the death
of her 16 month old son in July is a danger
to children and the community.
The state argued that Coleman who lives in a transitional housing
complex should be confined to her home
and opposed to her being around children and parents during
community activities.
But Coleman's attorney argued the activity falls under therapeutic
programming and promotes normalcy with her family.
This is a mother that wants to be a mother. She
wants to parent and we believe that's what
your bond order had originally wanted her to do.
You didn't put any restrictions on her ability to parent
and have her children and to not allow her
to have trick-or-treating with her kids is simply punishment to her.
State understands that she is not charged with intentional murder,
but she's still charged with negligence
to the point that a child is dead, a one-year-old.
And again, the judge is allowing Deja Coleman
to spend Halloween trick-or-treating
with her children, but she cannot leave her complex.
The judge also allowed Coleman to work the front desk at her complex
to offset her room and board.
Reporting live in Gwinnett County, Ray Adena, Fox 5 News.
We have that family trying to find some joy in a difficult time.
Ray, thank you.
