Roselle fired Police Chief Stacey Williams after an investigation found he’d used homophobic slurs. On Wednesday night, Williams’ wife, Sheila, appeared before Borough Council to confront town leaders over his termination. Earlier in the meeting, Mayor Donald Shaw and a supporter of Williams bickered over the matter, which Borough Attorney Charles Simmons said town leaders wouldn’t be discussing in public. The supporter, Monique Harrell of Willingboro, identifies herself as Williams’ cousin on social media.
I am the wife of former Chief Williams,
and I'm not here to receive answers and rehash
everything that has gone on.
It's been public knowledge, everybody knows,
and I want to thank those who have been in
support of us in our prayers for this ordeal that we've had to endure.
But I just wanted to come to the council as someone who,
of course, has personally, personally
been affected by this.
And I just want to know, and I don't expect an answer from you
because I know I'm not going to get one.
In fact, I don't really want one.
But I just want to put it out there and ask
and hope that it resonates with you.
Was there ever a time, an opportunity,
a thought that you may have reconsidered
or thought twice about the actions and the conscious decision
that was made to tear this man and his family's life apart?
I just want to know that because, you know, I'm an optimist
and I see the good in everybody and I know everybody has good in them.
And for whatever reason, that good turns to evil.
But I just want to know, was there ever a reconsideration?
You know, for all the times that he fought
and you fought him back and he won and you fought him back again
and he appealed and you fought him back again.
Was there ever a time that somebody said, oh, you know what?
Maybe that's enough.
okay he was he was punished enough he's
been dragged through the mud enough for somebody who
like everybody said worked for 30 years
and not just 30 years boots on the ground as a patrol
officer walking the streets his life
in danger working joint patrol working as a sergeant
working as a lieutenant working
as a lieutenant sergeant lieutenant detective captain he raised
himself through the ranks on his own.
He didn't kick nobody's back in. He didn't lie, cheat, steal,
kill. He wasn't a brutal police officer.
He didn't mismanage any funds. He didn't steal anything. He
didn't take no supplies that didn't belong to him.
None of that. None of that. And he wasn't even
given the opportunity for a meaningful conversation.
And I just, I just really, it hurts me to my heart
to think that our government people,
but I shouldn't be surprised because of who we have
in office anyway um that this could happen for somebody
who worked and worked their way through
the ranks and did it the right way
and he took people along with him he didn't stop nobody's
hustle hustle he messed with nobody's flow
but when it came to him it was like that's it so i
just wonder did you ever reconsider did you ever think about
the long-term repercussions
and everybody that's affected not just me and my girls
and his parents but friends people's lives
was turned upside down
and to think that this can be done just at the drop of a hat with no
protocol in place no type
of progressive discipline nothing you made that conscious
decision to do that because it didn't have
to be it could have been something else it could have
been a discipline you made the conscious decision
to tear him down as a person in a human being and
I just wonder if if you and if you haven't thought about it you need
to think about it I mean but
it's too late for that but if you haven't thought about it God help you
because he got a special
place for you how can a man serve his community
the way he did with barely a blemish on his record
I understand if you have punishment for something
But does the punishment fit the action
I'm speaking to you directly
I'm looking directly at you
Ma'am I'm going to say this
My name is Mrs. Monique Correll
H-A-R-R-E-L-L
That's my last name
I'm waiting for your answer
I'm standing here patiently asking you a question
I want to have my attorney answer your question
But your attorney can answer me as well
He's going to answer you right now
Okay because you told everyone else to talk to you
So I was talking to you
You directed it to me
I can't answer you but my attorney will
I was trying to tell you that, but you were talking over me.
No, I wasn't talking over you.
You wasn't speaking.
To the extent this involves a pending one litigation matter
and a pending personnel matter,
we can't discuss this in a public setting.
So that goes for anybody else that's going
to come to the mic on that inquiry.
No member of the DAIS can address that.
Okay, well, it's being addressed on every social media platform,
the New Jersey News.
Everything is going on.
So this is a public platform.
So I'm figuring maybe I need to come up here
and ask the question to the person I'm talking about
