Replacing a transformer, and diagnosing low voltage short.

#rheem
All right, on this one we have high voltage
but no low voltage.
I've already killed power to it,
but we're going to end up replacing this transformer.
That's one side of my low voltage.
This is the other.
High voltage goes straight
to the bottom of the contact.
Clip that.
Put a fuse
in this.
First I'm
going to put
out one
of those
little
breakers.
If you look
right here,
it looks
like black
is common,
orange is 240.
So black and orange
and cap off white and red.
I like
these
units.
They're easy to work on.
This is a newer
green dedicated
horizontal heat pump.
Primary
voltage.
And as you see on these,
I'm not sure you can see that, but common is grounded.
And that junction bar right there
is common connection.
I'm going to hook right up to that.
And this is going
to reconnect with our red.
I'm going to...
I'm going to fuse it.
Because
I don't
know
what
blew
the
transformer,
we are going
to put this little
breaker in here.
Y'all see that?
It's a little breaker.
It'll pop if
we got low
voltage
short.
So my breaker
blew,
but what
I'm going
to do is
disconnect.
See what I'm doing.
I'm gonna disconnect my thermostat wires.
They're
disconnected.
My board's showing
I got 24 volts.
Internally,
with nothing
calling it's
not tripping
a breaker
but let's
bring on the
blower you
see that i
jumped to blue and blew my breaker that tells me
to look at my reversing valve this is a
Rheem so it energizes
and heat i'm fixing to do
it again it's time to look
at reversing valve and
possibly frayed wires going to it i
just unplugged my reversing valve
and i found these frayed
that looks like that may have gone to metal i'm gonna take that up
and see if it still trips we
got that
plugged up
and taped up
so we're going
to jump out to
blue all right
we got blue
jumped out
nothing i think that's
our problem i'm fixing
to wire that all back up
and leave my fuse in and
go
from
there
clicking
is
good
24
volts
on
everything
As
far
as
I
know
it's
still
calling
Pulling at the thermostat.
But we can check that.
No, thermostat's not calling. It must be a time delay.
As you can hear, it's now on and running.
That was our problem.
Some frayed wires going to the reversing valve.
But I've got a fuse in it now, so if something like that happens again,
it won't blow the transformer, it'll blow a fuse.
