From Royal Gardens to Pumpkin Madness: Inside Germany’s Extraordinary Autumn Festival

This is a royal palace, 300 years of symmetry,
discipline, and aristocratic order.
Every autumn, it surrenders completely to 450,000 plus pumpkins,
slowly rotting,
not stored, not preserved,
left outside in the open air, decomposing on purpose.
Billed as the world's largest pumpkin exhibition,
it pulls hundreds of thousands of visitors
Ludwigsburg itself has under 95 000 residents.
This one show dwarfs its entire population.
So how did a palace built for order end up like this?
And why this year? Let's play!
Here in Germany,
adults now spend roughly three hours a day on their phones.
That's up from two and a half hours just two years earlier
and still climbing.
In 2026, researchers found one single notification slows
your thinking down for about seven seconds.
It isn't screen time alone.
It's the sheer number of pings over a hundred a day. Psychologists call
what happens next soft fascination,
attention that costs nothing to hold. Unlike a screen,
it lets an overstimulated,
exhausted attention span finally rest and recover.
A garden full of giant, pointless, hand-carved vegetables
turns out to be exactly that medicine.
This entire spectacle exists because, one winter,
frost destroyed a Swiss family's fruit orchard.
That farm belonged to brothers Beat and Martin Jucker,
ordinary fruit growers with no plan to build an empire.
With the orchard gone,
they replanted the land with vegetables and pumpkins instead,
almost by accident.
Their first harvest?
400 pumpkins sold out in two days, and the idea kept growing.
Every single pumpkin on display is grown locally,
right across Baden-Württemberg and Greater Stuttgart.
The exhibition's own count?
450,000-plus pumpkins across more than 600 varieties,
94,000 residents, hundreds of thousands of autumn visitors.
The math shouldn't work.
But it does. And touching any of it does something measurable,
not just something that merely feels
nice. One classic study found forest exposure
alone dropped stress hormone levels by over 13%.
The body's own relaxation response more than doubled,
just from being outside, present,
unhurried. This year's Let's Play theme
is built deliberately to span generations.
Pairing toys from very different decades.
Super Mario, Barbie, Optimus Prime.
Classic dice games like Kniffel, carved entirely from gourds.
German press coverage already names exactly what
this year's theme is really selling.
Nostalgia.
And it's not alone.
Germany's own tabletop game sales grew over 20% in 2025.
Start with the Curbis Regatta.
Giant, hollowed-out pumpkins raced like boats across the Castle Lake.
Pre-registration fills up fast every year.
This is one of the festival's most popular weekends.
Every October, growers compete here for Germany's heaviest pumpkin.
The local record stands at 1,226 kilograms.
Nearby, a live carving festival turns raw pumpkins
into sculpture in real time in front of you.
There's a family carving station, too,
built specifically for small hands and first attempts.
The food court alone serves more than 20 different pumpkin dishes,
from soup to fries.
After dark, the sculptures light up entirely,
a separate evening trail running into December.
No extra charge for any of this.
One regular garden ticket covers the exhibition,
the regatta, everything.
Here's the twist.
After four full months on display,
these pumpkins are still edible.
At giant pumpkin festivals elsewhere in the world,
the season often ends with one dramatic finale, a smash.
Here in Ludwigsburg, the ending is quieter.
Clubs, food banks, and kindergartens take pumpkins free.
What's left gets cooked down
and sold the following season as chutney and jam.
Nothing here is actually wasted.
The mess is the most carefully closed loop of all.
Researchers keep finding the same pattern.
Uncertainty sends people reaching backward
towards something tactile and familiar. A palace, a frozen orchard,
and half a million pumpkins prove one thing.
Play doesn't need a screen.
So tell us.
How many hours of screen time do you average in a day?
And be honest with us,
would you actually paddle a giant pumpkin across a castle lake?
Are you here for the giant sculptures?
Or honestly, just for the pumpkin soup?
