Why some people are choosing a raw meat and egg diet

To most of us, the idea of eating raw eggs and meat is...
Less than ideal, but a growing number of people
are actually choosing that lifestyle and they
say their health is better off because of it.
It's called dark nutrition. The people who partake
in this diet all have different reasons for doing it.
Maybe they're avoiding processed foods or
maybe they were failed by the health care system.
Joy Pai is one of those people and she documents
her journey on her Instagram, gleefully raw.
Joy, we want to welcome you to the program this morning.
Thank you. Thank you for inviting me.
Okay, so we were kind of talking in the break.
You said that you stay away from vegetables.
You think they're toxic, but everything else
is pretty much on the menu in the raw.
What made you decide to do this?
So I had severe health issues, seizures,
migraines, depression and the centralized
medical system failed me.
So I was on medications for it, it didn't help, I felt terrible.
So then I searched into alternative healing through food
and at first I just cut out gluten
and seed oils, processed foods.
But then from there, I got rid of my seizures. The
migraines were still there, the depression was still there
and I felt like I could feel better.
So I dove deep into the science, I mean,
once I learned that higher rates of cholesterol
are related to longer lifespans, I was like,
all right, what else are they lying about?
So I looked into raw food
and then I realized that 20 to 80% of vitamins are destroyed by
heat and specifically the B vitamins, they're heat unstable.
And also the enzymes that help you digest food,
those are destroyed by heat as well.
So knowing that I was like, all right, let me just try this.
So I start with raw beef liver because
Liver is the most nutritious form of food in the entire world,
highest in all of the vitamins and minerals.
So I started eating that and I didn't get sick.
I was like, wait a second, wasn't I supposed to die?
So since I didn't die, I dove even deeper.
I started eating raw muscle meat, raw brain, actually.
I have a nice lamb brain I was eating
for breakfast this morning.
And I just feel so much better on this diet.
Wait, wait, wait. Joy, come on, Natalie, ask.
I have a lot of questions.
To the average person eating testicles, brain,
stomach, intestines, I mean, that is gagging.
It's so disgusting.
So how do you get past the gag factor
of this and actually conceptualize that something
like this tastes good?
And how have you not gotten sick?
Yeah, well, you learned that they lied
to you about everything. I haven't gotten sick
because as long as the animal is healthy,
I eat 100% grass fed beef from my local farmer
when I do buy food as opposed to just eating roadkill.
Preferably, I would eat roadkill all the time
because then an animal never has to die for
me purposely, right? It's just it's already there.
I don't let it go to waste. And when
How great it makes you feel.
I mean, I feel ecstatic all the time eating this way.
So I don't even mind the taste in the beginning.
I'll admit the first like three months I
was like, this is really gross.
Kind of forced myself to eat it
because I knew how good it was for my health.
But yeah, I mean the proof's in the pudding.
I feel the best I have in my entire life.
Like I feel better now than I did when I was 18.
So I'm not gonna lie, you do look great, but I gotta go back to this.
So okay, for like that lamb brain you had, it was lamb.
Right. Lamb brain that you have up there. So this is are you seasoning?
So let me get this straight. Right.
Because normally, OK, you're just going to take a chunk.
Cool. Normally, like for some of us. Right. We go to the grocery store.
We pull the meat out the package.
We clean it up real nice. Season it. Cook it.
Are you are you cleaning this meat? Are you seasoning it?
I know you said roadkill is your preference.
Are you just rolling up and just taking it home
and getting the fur off and eating it?
Yeah, I mean, sometimes you get a little fur
in a bite, that's fine, a little bit more
fiber.
Like, I'll eat it on the side of the road if I'm really hungry.
But if I'm not really hungry, I'll take it home,
I'll prep it a little on a wooden cutting
board.
But I'm not afraid of bacteria.
Bacteria does not just cause disease.
So that's where I stand on that.
What other health misnomers do you think we have learned
and are just ingrained in our
culture?
So avoiding saturated fat and cholesterol, specifically animal fat.
I think animal fat should be the core of every human being's diet.
I eat raw butter, I eat raw beef fat, obviously,
and I feel just way more vital with that.
So yeah, don't fear, don't fear cholesterol,
eat your raw eggs, I slurp a few every morning,
it's great.
I will say, obviously, at one point there was a caveman, right?
They weren't necessarily cooking everything that they ate.
In terms of like doing this, right?
Do you feel like, I mean, I guess the overall,
have you impacted other people to get on board
with this as well?
Because I'm sure when your family first heard
this, they thought you were a lunatic.
Yeah, my mom still thinks I'm going to die and I'm like,
but mom, I'm doing way better
now than I was two and a half years ago.
So proof's in the pudding. But yeah, I've gotten
a bunch of people on the raw meat diet
and a lot of people have healed their health issues
with it.
So my health issues were very severe.
That's why I went down this path. I mean the seizures
like I was in the hospital, I thought I was going to die,
right? So I was desperate. But
now it's to the point where I'm just optimizing my health.
And some of the women I've talked
to, they actually helped to get rid of their PCOS symptoms
by switching to raw meat, especially
like, you know, get more iron.
Less painful during your periods, I mean,
if you're eating raw spleen, really good to
eat before your period.
Just tip for my women out there, tip for my girlies.
Okay, how large is this community?
Because this isn't like we threw a dart at a dartboard
and just found this topic.
I mean, this was covered by the New York Times.
There are conventions for people like yourself.
So this seems like it is a pretty large group, community.
Yeah, personally, I've met over 100 primals,
sometimes they're called, people who eat
raw meat and predominantly a raw diet.
But it's gotta be at least 10,000 just based
on the traction it gets on TikTok and Instagram
and like very niche topics.
like there's a man called Ojanus Wanderplanets who popularized this diet.
And if somebody posts about him, they'll get like,
you know, a hundred thousand likes on TikTok.
And you have to know him to like that,
it's not just for your normie to understand.
Okay. Last question for you. I got a whole bunch.
We really could have dedicated a show to you at
this point, but, um, you know, we all have cheat meals, right?
Like there's a day where I might
want a donut. Do you ever cheat on this diet
or this is a straight up lifestyle? No veering off.
I just feel terrible when I eat anything cooked,
even like a cooked piece of meat.
So I don't do it.
I have no desire.
I'll pass like some warm cookies and be like, that's disgusting.
That's some polysorbate 80 seed oil BS.
Like, I don't want that.
So why do you think real quick?
And then I know we got to go.
Why do you think that?
Because what you started off saying that they've lied to us.
Why do you think they have lied to us?
What would be the point?
Is this, you know, corporate greed?
What's the point here?
Yeah, they gotta keep you a customer in the medical system.
You gotta keep going back for your pills,
for your monthly refill, right, to get your
statins, lower your cholesterol.
But I mean, I feel great with high cholesterol, so I'm chilling, yeah.
If people want more information about this diet,
where is a trusted source that they
can find information?
I mean, my account, I go into the science on it too.
So gleefully raw at Instagram and also YouTube,
I make long form content.
Yeah, I mean, or you could look up,
Ojanus Wanderplanets' interviews
on YouTube, I think that would be useful.
Well, we appreciate you, Joy. No judgment here.
Everybody's entitled to do whatever they want in
this world. And hey, I find what you do interesting.
Can I pull up on a lamb brain and eat it?
Probably not yet. But I will say, you know, I respect your position.
This is your body. This is your choice.
All right. Thanks so much, Joy.
