Montreal's police chief once again
speaking out about allegations against his officers.
The law of silence, Omertà.
But he says the culture of silence is lifting.
An officer is under investigation
for alleged misconduct and obstruction
in a domestic violence case in 2025.
I'm going to make sure that if it's true, they're going to pay for it.
According to Radio Canada sources,
the officer reportedly deleted video evidence off a victim's
phone when he recognized the alleged abuser.
The officer's female partner first reported the
incident to their supervisors but had to go up the chain of command
because she felt she was being ignored
The officer worked at Station 39 in Montreal North,
one of the city's most diverse neighbourhoods.
It's the same station where in June,
a 16-member patrol unit was suspended following allegations
which included officers cutting off dreadlocks
as trophies during police interventions.
We were not surprised,
but we are as many citizens angry because there is no action.
An officer from another station
is facing allegations he filmed himself urinating on homeless people.
Montreal's mayor says trust between citizens and the police is fragile.
I salute the police, the woman police officer
that actually denounced what happened.
When we change a culture inside of an organization,
it takes time and we see resistance.
And we have to trust that our director of the SPVM has all
the intentions to change that culture.
In all three incidents,
it was other officers who reported their colleagues.
People are finding the courage despite
the wall of silence to still come forward.
I think it's just a matter of having people in leadership that have
the courage, the intestinal fortitude
to do their jobs even when it's difficult.
The officer in the domestic violence case has
been assigned to desk duties.
The police chief says now the Crown Prosecutor
is investigating to see if criminal charges are warranted.
Warranted.
