Today we`ll be riding bus no 25 from Whitechapel Station to Fenchurch Street Station.

The area of Whitechapel was named after the early 14th century St Mary Matfelon church, popularly known as St Mary's, Whitechapel. Originally created in 1270 as a 'chapel of ease' at St Dunstan Stepney, the church was rebuilt in 1329.

The area was the centre of the London Jewish community in the 19th and early 20th century, and the location of the infamous 11 Whitechapel murders (1888–91), some of which were attributed to the mysterious serial killer known as Jack the Ripper.

Famously known for the Jack the Ripper murders, Whitechapel easily became one of the most notorious slums in Victorian London (Diniejko). Whitechapel wasn't always a slum. Up until the end of the 16th century it was a “relatively prosperous district” (Diniejko).

Theft was the most common crime in urban areas during the late 19th century. This was also true in Whitechapel in the late 19th century. Many thefts took place in crowded areas such as rookeries. Overcrowding and poor lighting made theft easier from criminals to commit.

Today's Whitechapel is a very different place: buzzy, multicultural and creative. The Jewish community – established by refugees who arrived in the 1870s to work in the rag trade – has moved out to the suburbs and Bengalis have taken their place.
