Michigan Dem Haley Stevens endorses Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers

With just under 48 hours to go before Americans vote in the midterm elections, there's been a dramatic development in the race for US Senate in Michigan. Democratic Congresswoman Haley Stevens has endorsed the Republican candidate, Mike Rogers, over her own party's nominee, Abdel El-Sayed. He had defeated her for the Democratic Senate nomination. My vote for Senate, I am just one vote as every Michigander. My vote for Senate is going to be with Mike Rogers and I will tell you why. Because we have to stand with country. We can't stand with hate. We can't stand with Hassan Piker. A friend of mine was talking about how education is on the ballot and it's very true. There's a lot of young people looking at this election. I was a young person once and we've got to make a choice about who is standing with them. Well, US President Donald Trump has weighed in on the rift between the Michigan Democrats ahead of a campaign event in Iowa. He hailed Stephen's endorsement whilst once again attacking Abdel El-Sayed for his faith. He's a jihadist. He's a Muslim Brotherhood guy. Yeah, I'd say she's a danger. I think she was very brave doing it. And she did it for the people of Michigan. And I have great respect. I don't know her. I've never met her. But I have great respect for her, I will tell you. And she put up a great race. You know, she was supposed to lose by like 25 points. And she ended up losing by half a point. She almost won. In fact, a lot of people thought she won. So I have a lot of respect for her. Richard Gaisford breaks down the political development from Southfield, Michigan. Hayley Stephens had gone on the record of saying she would be voting for Abdel El-Sayed, she would be campaigning with him, and she was throwing the whole weight of her coalition behind him. And that coalition includes a large block of Jewish voters, a large block of black voters. But she then put a condition on it. She said that he had to denounce a video, an advert that had come out that suggested that Israel effectively was taking American money, bombing Gaza, And the cost of that was putting up the... cost of living here in the United States. Now, I'll say I didn't want to do that. That led to something of a big public falling out. He doesn't want to talk about her, but she certainly has been wanting to talk about him. And it's really become something of a mess. Mike Rogers seeing this as something of a victory, getting her on board. But with just one full day of campaigning left, it's hard to see whether it's going to have a big impact or not. The Michigan Democrats have put out a press release saying that Haley Stevens has lost her way, that she's jumping into bed in effect with Mike Rogers, who they say is joined at the hip with Donald Trump, reminding voters of that link, thinking that that is one of the best ways they can focus people's minds on voting for a Democratic candidate. Someone that worked with Haley Stevens, he's gone on record and said that she's become unstable, that he believes that she's been led to this decision by her fiance who a few days ago also said that he would be backing Mike Rogers. This is an area that was settled by Bavarians, immigrant groups, cultural groups, racial groups, all playing a major part in the elections here in Michigan and Abdul El-Sayed today has been courting the black vote and has been speaking at a black church in downtown Detroit.
