York Way was named Mayde Lane (1467) and Maiden Lane (1735) (commemorated in the Maiden Lane Estate, Maiden Lane Bridge - over the Regent's Canal and the former Maiden Lane railway station), it became York Road in the 19th century, and the current name was only adopted in 1938.

The Elizabeth Tower, known to many as Big Ben, is currently undergoing the most extensive conservation project since it was built in Victorian times. During this work, the Elizabeth Tower is closed to visitors.

The restoration project is expected to be complete by 2021. It came a step closer to completion on September 6 when the hands of the clock were restored to their original Prussian blue colour — it was only during this project that workers discovered the hands of the clock were blue and not black.

When completed, the frame and hands were Prussian blue, but were painted black in the 1930s to disguise the effects of air pollution. The original colour scheme was reinstated during the 2017–2021 conservation work.
