All right, Meredith, this is just a shocking crime.
So there's a woman who's out running, and then she's attacked.
Kind of pick up the story from there.
What do we know happened?
Sure.
So a 28-year-old woman named Emily Suarez, she was out.
This is her right here?
This is her pictured right here in running gear, actually.
This is the photo that's been released by the NYPD here.
But she was out for a run on Friday night around 8 p.m. in Brooklyn.
So still pretty early in the evening, 8 p.m.
I know it gets dark early now, but it's not an...
Unreasonable time to be out for a run.
And they say she was running along the Belt Parkway here,
which is pictured right here, this path, toward the Verrazzano Bridge.
And she was attacked along
the waterfront path between Bay 8th and Bay 17th Streets.
Now, she suffered stab wounds to both sides of her neck.
And now she is on life support, you know,
in critical, critical condition right now.
Just a difficult, difficult situation.
I saw some reports, too, that she may have...
Called her father before.
I mean, I don't know if that's confirmed.
I think that was in the post.
Yeah.
She may have contacted a family member in the minutes before.
And so what are the investigators saying about
the possible suspect here?
Do we have any description?
Do we have anything along those lines?
There's absolutely no description of the suspect right now, actually.
And we're not seeing any surveillance footage
from this either right now.
I mean, the only real footage that we have
is just kind of showing the area.
And if you look and you talk to people who frequent this path,
they say that, you know,
It needs better lighting.
We actually heard from a few people right here
just kind of paint some color on
what this path is like at night.
All right, so let's take a listen to that.
That's very shocking, makes me feel unsafe.
I was just planning to walk by near the ocean here.
And now, since it's dark, it's kind of scary to walk around here,
especially by yourself at night, like as a woman.
I think they should put more lights here and more security,
like policemen, you know, walking.
We feel more safe then.
I have a daughter of 18, and when I talk to her about, you know,
when you go around, go outside, you got to be vigilant.
She always put her in
You know, the earmuff, the earphone on, and she like ignore me.
But yesterday I spoke to her the same way,
and she started listening, you know.
You've got to be vigilant.
Got to be vigilant is sort of what he was saying there.
And so we also know that I'm familiar with that area.
I mean, it is kind of like there's a lot of people out there.
Certainly during the day, there's probably more.
We saw some of like the fishermen and things along those lines.
But at night, it's not uncommon
to see people out there who are running, right?
Yeah.
You know, and State Senator Steve Chan basically,
you know, gave some advice to people saying
that they need to stay vigilant if they go out there.
They're, as you just said, they need to try and stay away from grassy.
I see areas or areas along this path where someone can easily hide.
Just warning people, maybe don't be alone.
Let's hear from him right here.
All right, here we go.
I can't tell you how heartbroken I
am and how angry I am that this happened here.
I'm living here 50 years and I've never seen anything like this.
I biked this path myself for hundreds of days in the past.
And we are going to bring this animal to justice.
This is...
You know it's interesting
because just last week we were reporting about the
woman who was attacked in Central Park.
And that was something that got a lot of people concerned.
And this is obviously a very different location.
Thank you.
Circumstances are different.
But I feel like that is something that,
you know, a lot of people are talking about.
Still just an unprovoked random attack.
That's what police are basically calling these, both of these things.
So right now, the NYPD is asking for anybody
with any sort of information to contact them.
And Crime Stoppers right now is offering a $10,000 reward
for any information that leads to the arrest of the suspect.
All right. Meredith Corman, thank you very much.
Let's take a look back up at the big board.
We'll see what else is going on right now.
