Assalamu`alaikum

Today we`ll be Exploring MillBank, Bridge Street, and Westminster Bridge.
The riverside wall and the road now called Millbank (formerly Grosvenor Road) were created in the mid-19th century as part of the Thames Embankment project. The penitentiary was demolished in 1892 and the Royal Army Medical College and the Tate Gallery were erected on its site.

Millbank is an area of central London in the City of Westminster, located by the River Thames, east of Pimlico and south of Westminster. The area derives its name from a mill house belonging to nearby Westminster Abbey.

A bridge at Westminster was proposed in 1664, but opposed by the Corporation of London and the watermen. Further opposition held sway in 1722. However an intervening bridge (albeit in timber) was built at Putney in 1729 and the scheme received parliamentary approval in 1736.

The famous London attraction has been largely silent since 2017, although it has been reconnected for significant occasions such as the UK's departure from the EU and Remembrance Day. The Great Clock, which the bell is part of, has been dismantled and repaired as part of the renovation project.

The current restoration has seen it out of action for the longest time in its history. A number of milestones on the project are expected to be reached over the next 12 months, with the installation of the restored clock mechanism beginning this summer. The restoration project is expected to be complete by 2022. It came a step closer to completion on September 6 when the hands of the clock were restored to their original Prussian blue colour — it was only during this project that workers discovered the hands of the clock were blue and not black.
