We're about to get an update on the breaking news.
One person dead on Highway 175 after shots fired.
We don't know by whom.
And we see Chief Jeffrey Norman walking to the podium there
where that meeting staging area is taking place at 46th and Lloyd.
Christina Van Zyl standing by on that Lloyd Street ramp there.
Let's listen to Chief Norman, hear what he has to say.
On Monday, November 2nd, 2026, at approximately 8.15 p.m.,
A sergeant near Highway 175 in Lloyd
Observed a truck make a U-turn
and drive southbound in a northbound lane.
The sergeant called his observation to dispatch
and attempted to make contact with the suspect driver.
During the encounter, the suspect displayed a firearm.
The sergeant fired his duty firearm, striking the suspect.
The suspect was pronounced deceased on the scene.
The suspect firearm was recovered.
The sergeant involved in this incident
is a 37-year-old male with over 15 years of service.
He will be placed on administrative duty.
The Marquee Area Investigative Team will
be investigating this incident.
The West Allis Police Department is the lead agency.
This is a fluid and ongoing investigation.
Video related to this incident will be released
in accordance with the Standing Operating Procedure 575.
Any questions?
Chief Norman, did the suspect shoot or just display the firearm?
We don't have all the full details on that.
I know that we're still looking at a couple different video
and also regarding some interviews.
It's still ongoing.
Was the suspect out of his vehicle at the time of the shooting?
So we are still looking at that, but yes, he was outside the vehicle.
We don't know the extent of where
that contact with the sergeant happened.
And so those details will still be forthcoming as well.
Sergeant was wearing body cam?
No.
Did the sergeant fire any shots?
Yes, we understand he fired shots.
We don't know the full extent of it.
Again, still waiting for those details later.
Is there any video of this?
Yes, there's video.
Can you explain? Is it dash cam? Is it doorbell? What do you have?
So we have a number of different sources of video,
so we're still looking at all the different sources of video.
So we're still ongoing.
And all of those are under the SOP, correct?
Yes.
Okay, thank you.
One more question.
Were there bystanders nearby at the time of the shots being fired?
So at this time, we do not know if there's any other witnesses,
but at this time, we don't have anybody beside the officer
and the individual who was shot.
Just for our viewers, do you know how much longer
the interstate will be closed?
That's it. That's it.
You don't know. You don't know.
Thank you.
Okay, so let's recap a little. We're going to bring
in Christine here, but we've got to let her
time to get the microphone off the podium here.
So police did fire. A sergeant did fire at a
suspect who he had pulled over for an illegal
U-turn trying to go south in the northbound lane
of 175. The suspect displayed a firearm,
and that's when the sergeant, a 37-year-old male,
fired the fatal shots.
Yeah, we do not know if that suspect fired the firearm that he showed.
The thing that I was going to ask Christina,
and we'll get clarification when she does get that
microphone available, Chief Norman making very,
very brief comments there. Somebody asked about
body camera video, and he answered no, no,
that there wasn't body camera video. We don't know
what exactly that means,
because Milwaukee Police Department has body camera video. They're
I don't know what he meant by what he said no because
then they asked you is there video and he said yes there is video
of the incident but it appears as though at this point there
was no body camera video earlier sources had told us
that this driver was going the wrong way when he was stopped
and he did pull out a gun we didn't know at that point if the sergeant
and officer had fired and yes we are hearing now that that officer
that sergeant fired the gun and the suspect is dead.
And usually in these situations, the chief
Chief will say Agency X is taking over, which is required by state law.
So, Christina, actually,
there's some more questions that we had that the chief did not
hang around for.
What jumped out at you from that briefing?
Well, actually, when that wrapped up,
a few of us had some follow-up questions as to that sergeant.
We did just confirm that the sergeant was on duty at the time
of this and that they were in a marked squad car.
So we got a little bit of a clarification there.
But why no body camera?
Yeah, very brief.
And that's a question we're all wondering too,
because if they were on duty, they do wear the
body cam footage. But as you saw from that press conference,
we were only allowed three or four
questions and then the chief walked away again to,
as I was saying initially, yeah, it was odd
that he just answered kind of no, but then he did say,
yeah, there is video. So there is video
Is this video coming from perhaps a squad or another body cam?
Video, you know, I wasn't sure if he was saying,
no, the officer didn't have it on
or there's no body camera video at all.
And that wasn't clear.
You know, we do have the DOT cameras on 175,
so maybe there's video there.
I know the video we were showing earlier does not show the incident.
It just shows the response.
But that's not clear where that video is coming from.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
What else did you ask him as he
was walking away that we did not see on camera?
Well, I asked the last question of how long
do they plan on being here just for our viewers
planning on traveling on the interstate, did not get that answered.
And then as we were kind of huddling as media,
we asked his assistant, someone who works
with the chief just to follow up on,
was that sergeant on duty and were they in a marked
vehicle?
And she told us yes.
But they walked away right after that.
Okay.
We do need to let you go.
We do know that two things did not get answered.
First of all, when the area there may be reopened,
the north and southbound lanes are going to remain closed.
When you asked the chief, he basically said,
no, he doesn't know when it's going to be open.
And is the body, is it still there?
We have not been told that body's been removed,
and perhaps that's the reason that those lanes will remain closed.
Right. And it's not clear. So at this point,
both lanes, both directions still closed at this hour.
All right. Christina Van Zels, thanks very much.
What's curious here is that
another agency has not been announced
who would be investigating this as is required by law.
And why that sergeant didn't have a body cam video on and rolling.
Yeah, that's very interesting.
And again, not to read the tea leaves too much here,
but you and I have covered a number of news stories
where Chief Norman comes to the microphone.
He was exceedingly brief tonight.
He's always very methodical,
and he's clear about what he's saying and concise.
But tonight he was very,
very brief and not divulging a lot of information.
I'm wondering if there were some...
Again, this is me wondering if they're looking at protocols, perhaps.
Yeah, again, why wasn't, does every officer require,
is it just required at certain levels?
I don't know.
These are questions we want to get the answer to.
We waited up to get some of those answers.
We didn't get them.
We hope to learn more coming up on Fox 6 Wake Up,
which starts in a few hours at 4.30.
Yeah, in the meantime, the latest on Fox Local
and our website, fox6now.com.
Thanks for staying up with us.
We'll have more as soon as, give you more as soon as we get more.
Good night.
