I grabbed a sheet of half inch plywood
and I turned it into something nostalgic with a
modern twist. I had this cut out
from my grandparents holiday decor and I traced
three of them onto plywood. I cut them out with a jigsaw.
I do recommend starting with
the antlers because they are most fragile
and can be harder to cut when the board becomes less solid.
You can see that jigsaw blades work on the upstroke so the
Top side is really jagged and doesn't look good
but when you flip it over the bottom side is good
so when you trace your design make sure to do it the opposite way.
Then I sanded the back and front
sides with 150 grit sandpaper.
Even though you won't see the back side you want to make sure
the edges are smooth. You'll see why at the end.
Once all three were sanded I wiped all the extra
I took the extra sawdust off and I brought them inside.
I applied primer to the fronts and the edges.
From my experience it is really important to
apply primer on plywood because the tannins
in the wood will bleed through and impact the color.
When the primer was dry I applied exterior paint.
Once dry I flipped the deer over
and I attached outdoor mini lights with a staple gun.
You want to try and keep all of the lights towards the inside
and not sticking out beyond the plywood as much as possible.
The antlers are definitely a little tricky
and it's hard to get it to the lights too high up
but I did the best that I could
and you'll see
in a minute I think it turned out okay.
I placed them outside against my house.
It's important that they are pretty tight
against the wall with only a small gap.
This is what they look like during the day
and here they are at night.
I love how these plywood deer give me nostalgic vibes but the
silhouette part makes them a little more modern.
These deer in the yard see my little deer.
