Well, the Hennepin County attorney race has
been interesting as the legacy of the current
county attorney looms over it.
Mary Moriarty not running for re-election, so it's Minnesota
Representative Cedric Frazier versus
former federal prosecutor Anders Volk.
Fox 9's Karen Scullin joining us live
with how this race is looking tonight. Karen.
It is a non-partisan race,
yet politics do seem to be working their way into it.
One seen as progressive, one seen as just moderate.
Both, though, are Democrats.
Now, Anders Volk is running on the, hey, I'm not Mary Moriarty.
That is, he's saying they need a change in the office.
He will not necessarily follow all of her controversial policies.
Cedric Frazier saying, yeah, I did campaign for Mary Moriarty way back
when she was voted into office, but I don't always agree with her.
So some differences there,
but they actually have some similarities as well, especially
when it comes to juvenile justice and things like issues like.
Prosecuting felonies for non-public safety traffic stops,
which are things like a broken
taillight and registration expiration.
Here's what they both had to say on prosecuting
those felonies during those stops.
We have our county sheriff
and law enforcement leaders from across Hennepin County telling
the public this is going to make us less safe and.
We learned about this policy at a press conference.
That's not how you lead, that's
not how you make good policy that actually makes us all
safer.
And so I think that policy is a great example
of a policy that was poorly executed and that
needs to get pulled down.
It's also an issue that I worked on at the state legislature.
This was right after Dante Wright was killed.
We brought legislation to deal with some
of these traffic stops that were not public safety
threats in order to decrease some of the negative.
And tragic interactions between law enforcement and civilian drivers.
I understand the idea because
when we look at some of the disparities in terms of traffic
stops and what we actually get out of that,
if we're finding weapons, if we're finding
drugs to make our community safe, the numbers are very low.
Now, both say they will prosecute federal agents
who cross the line.
They were very clear about that.
I did check out their socials throughout the day
a little bit today, and interesting to note
that Frazier put up this one that says,
then we win, finally we prosecute ICE.
That's him saying if we get elected,
he's putting his stamp on that.
And meanwhile, Frazier kind of showing his campaign staff
out and about, still knocking on doors, still campaigning.
He actually is doing the same, knocking on the doors
In the rain still, so they're not done yet. Both out still campaigning.
This will be a fun one to watch as the results come in.
Frazier kind of expected to take this one, but you never know.
We'll have to wait and see as the results roll
in throughout the evening. We're live in Minneapolis.
Karen Scullin, Fox 9. But a final push before polls close.
A lot of people running on adrenaline at this point.
All right. Thanks, Karen.
