If the fastest way to a man's heart is his stomach,
here in Texas, donuts, chicken, tacos,
and cookies are being distributed to win over young voters
and get them to the polls.
Thank you very much.
You're going to nag your friends every single day until they vote
because you guys are going
to determine this election, your generation.
Launched in 2022, this initiative was created after Heather Hagerty
became aware of the difficulties young people face when trying to vote.
So there are 50 million eligible young voters in the U.S.,
but almost half are not registered to vote.
And that's a big gap, so our goal is to help register,
educate and mobilize young voters
because they have a lot of political power if they vote.
In Texas, where voting procedures are among
the most restrictive in the country, Heather
even goes as far as personally accompanying some students.
She drives them to a polling place
where they can cast a limited ballot.
An option available in particular to voters
who have moved to another county
without having had time to update their voter registration.
Today one of the students I talked to had
a hard time voting at the polls and she finally did and
she was very emotional and that made me feel very emotional
because that is exactly why I
do this work is so that they feel that they have a voice in this world
and that's everything.
For some of these students,
this mobilization is also a first step in civic life.
They will be voting for the first time, but they are all aware
that this election could have major implications for Texas.
I think this election could mark a big turning point
in Texas. It's been red for so long,
right? Almost half a century.
And this is really a time where it could flip blue. I mean,
anything could happen. That would be big
for the country as a whole. It'd be very different.
But young voters are far from being
the only ones targeted by Republicans and Democrats.
With more than $560 million spent on political advertising,
the Texas campaign has become the most expensive ever,
a record that reflects just how much is at stake in this election.
