Election coverage. Wisconsin has a new governor elect.
And by the way, his name is David Crowley.
The Milwaukee County executive will succeed
Governor Tony Evers as a fellow Democrat.
Crowley declared victory a little after 10 o'clock last night.
His election makes history.
Crowley will be the state's first black governor.
A look at those unofficial vote totals now.
Taking a look, Crowley with 54 percent, Tom Tiffany 46.
So looks like that number is continuing to stay.
Like that.
So we'll continue to keep watching these numbers as they come in.
In the meantime, Stephanie Quirk
is live now to explain how we got here.
Good morning, Steph.
Good morning. What a remarkable comeback for David Crowley.
If you remember just months ago,
the shakeups on the Democratic side of things
in terms of the primary race now turning to November
and he is the governor-elect with Tiffany conceding
and thanking his supporters,
also congratulating Crowley just before 10
o'clock last night at a watch party in Wausau.
I think that's what we saw now.
David Crowley, as we know, is the Milwaukee County executive.
He's served in that role since 2020.
20 and.
And this race will...
Particularly took a turn when Crowley suspended his campaign.
He jumped back in after Lieutenant Governor Sarah Rodriguez dropped out
with the backing of Governor Tony Evers.
Of course, now, as we reported,
both candidates had high-profile national backing.
President Donald Trump endorsed Tiffany,
while Crowley had support from former President Barack Obama
and Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg,
as well as the governor's backing and endorsement.
The biggest local impact here, too, is that Crowley,
of course, has grew up on the north side of Milwaukee
and has led the county since 2020.
His move to the governor's office will create a leadership change,
of course, at the county level.
It also means that Democrats will hold
on to the governor's office for a third consecutive term,
and that's the first time it's happened in Wisconsin history.
Take a listen to what both had to say,
both Tiffany and Crowley, at those walks.
parties last night after the results came in.
I want to congratulate David Crowley on his victory.
While we have our differences,
we both love this great state, and I wish him and his family
the very best as he prepares to serve as Wisconsin's next governor.
Because of you, a boy who grew up facing eviction
will now live in the governor's residence.
Tonight, Wisconsin made history.
And Evers shared a statement with Fox 6.
It read in part that a few months ago David Crowley becoming
Wisconsin's next governor might have seemed like a long shot
but fight runs in David Crowley's blood.
Back to you guys. All right Steph before you go,
what happened to Crowley's county executive seat now
and he takes on the role in January?
Yes, so that is the question too,
who will fill that role because the chairwoman perhaps could take
that role as he goes to January and then that turnover happens
when he becomes governor, succeeding Governor Evers.
So perhaps the chairwoman or they could have a special election
where they choose who they want to fill that role, Derricka.
All right, Stephanie, thanks for the update.
We'll see you in just a bit.
