Midterm elections also brought a shift to Texas government,
ending Republican control of the top offices.
Yeah, three-term. Governor Greg Abbott lost
to State Representative Gina Hinojosa.
She will be the state's first Latina governor.
Dan Godwin is live in Dallas with more. Hi, Dan.
Hello, Paige. Just a few months ago,
a victory by Gina Hinojosa over Governor Abbott
would have seemed a very unlikely outcome,
but Hinojosa pulling off the huge win,
signaling a new era in Texas politics.
Now, here's a look at the vote totals. With 93%
of the ballots counted, Hinojosa with 53%, Abbott...
46 percent. The 52-year-old Hinojosa will
be the third woman to hold the governor's office
in the state's history.
The last Democrat to do so was Ann Richards, who lost re-election
to George W. Bush in 1994.
The governor-elect addressed a crowd at Assembly Hall in Austin
just across I-35 from the Capitol building last night.
This governor's office does not belong to me.
It does not belong to my party.
It belongs to you. This is our Texas,
this is our government, and this is our one fight.
And tonight, we won.
The voters have delivered a mandate for change
and it is change they will get.
Hinojosa was born in McAllen, Texas.
She ran for governor as a member of the Texas House of Representatives,
representing the 49th district, which includes Central Austin.
Governor Greg Abbott
also watched last night's poll results in the state capitol.
He spoke to his supporters for about 10 minutes,
thanking them for his three terms as governor.
I know that we are leaving Texas
in far better shape than it's ever been.
Together we have accomplished a lot.
Texas was just recognized as having the best business climate
of any state in the United States.
But maybe most importantly, we protected Texans when they needed
the most. When the border was left wide open,
we stepped up and we secured our border.
The outgoing governor said he called Gina Hinojosa last night
to congratulate her.
Hinojosa will be inaugurated on January 19th of 2027.
Reporting live near downtown Dallas, Dan Godwin on Good Day.
All right, Dan, thanks.
Here's a look at other statewide offices
that will be now held by Democrats.
Vicki Goodwin will be the new lieutenant governor,
ousting Dan Patrick from the spot.
Democrats also won the attorney general,
comptroller, land commissioner,
agriculture commissioner, and railroad commissioner races.
They made significant gains in the state house
and could win a majority.
The state senate balance of power will likely remain the same.
