Now we're getting a new governor
for the first time in more than 30 years.
It's a Democrat, and for the first time ever, it's a Latina.
Good day, Austin.
Juliana Jackson has more on the gubernatorial race
and how both those candidates are reacting.
Morning, Juliana.
Good morning, Katie and Dave.
Gina Hinojosa is making history
as the first Latina elected as governor.
She beats out one of the most influential Republicans in the country,
Governor Greg Abbott, who has been in office for more than a decade.
State Representative Gina Hinojosa
is flipping the governor's mansion blue
for the first time in more than three decades.
Hinojosa campaigning on making Texas more affordable,
investing in public education,
and limiting the influence of wealthy political donors.
In her victory speech, she told supporters this week...
More honest, more just,
and worthy of the people Texas call home.
And we will never forget the simple truth that brought us here tonight.
Texas belongs to the people of Texas.
Meanwhile, for Governor Greg Abbott,
the loss ends his bid for a fourth term.
Abbott campaigning on his record of economic growth,
border security, and school choice
with the backing of President Trump.
Abbott conceding Tuesday night
and thanking his supporters for their years of work.
The joy of my life to have the opportunity
to be the governor of the great state of Texas.
The effort you all put into this campaign.
The effort that you all invested into our state is really incalculable.
I want you to know how much all Texans appreciate
everything you have done to keep Texas, Texas.
Despite a major fundraising advantage,
it wasn't enough to secure another four years.
Abbott says he will support Hinojosa
as she prepares to take office in January.
This isn't the only upset that Democrats had last night.
Like you both said earlier, James Tallarico beating out
Attorney General Ken Paxton for that U.S. Senate seat.
Reporting live at the Capitol, Juliana Jackson, back to you.
