Upset in Maine, Democrat Troy Jackson unseating
five-term Republican Senator Susan Collins,
ending her nearly three-decade run in the U.S. Senate.
So Fox's Kaylee Schuyler is joining us live from Portland, Maine.
Kaylee, good morning to you. What's been reaction there from Maine?
Good morning.
Hey there, Elise. So I
was at Troy Jackson's election night HQ until early this
morning and hundreds upon hundreds of people were there
to cheer him on as he gave his victory speech
and to say they were excited is almost an understatement.
I think it's the most maybe
one of the most unexpected political moments of my life.
It's been a very long time coming,
about 30 years and better late than never.
Susan Collins has dismissed us since at least 2015.
We finally have Senator Troy Jackson fight for us.
There were a lot of twists and turns in the Senate race.
Jackson became the nominee in July
after Democrat Graham Plattner dropped out
of the race following a series of controversies.
Jackson had 101 days to campaign.
His message focused on shaking things up after decades of
Collins representing Maine in the Senate.
Jackson saying his loyalty would be to Mainers and not D.C.
On the campaign trail, he consistently
tied Senator Collins to President Trump,
and last night he thanked all of his supporters,
telling them he would fight for them every day in the Senate.
We've been in this 101 days and, you know,
I've known from the start this wasn't about Troy Jackson.
It was about changing the world that we know is wrong and,
you know, making a life better for all of us.
Collins is one of the most
senior Republicans in the Senate.
She campaigned as an independent thinker,
saying she votes against her party
more than any other senator.
I've been talking to voters for the
better part of the last month and a
half here in Maine and many wanted
to give her a sixth term believing she
could work with Democrats and Republicans.
Last night, Collins said in a statement quote.
It has been the honor of my life to serve
the people of Maine and the United States
Senate. I'm proud of all I've been able
to accomplish for our state and for our
country in the past 30 years. Collins
called Jackson to congratulate him and
She says she will be working with this team
to make sure it's a smooth transition.
Elise.
Yeah, Kaylee, certainly a historic night for us here in Georgia
and one there in Maine
as well.
A lot of changes happening.
I feel like I don't know about you, Kaylee,
but it's like at the end of this now we can
all kind of breathe.
The political ads are wrapping up
and look at you in one of the most beautiful picturesque
scenes I think we've seen from a reporter today.
I mean, that is absolutely stunning where you are.
I know we're having the most beautiful day.
I can't believe this is the weather we're having
in Portland in, you know, basic almost mid-November at this point,
or I guess it's still early
November. I don't even know what day
or week it is at this point, at least. We've been on the
campaign trail for a while.
But yeah, I think a lot of people are breathing a sigh of relief
this morning. You know, people,
voters have been complaining to me about the ads. I think a lot
of people have been on edge just to see what's going to happen.
So, you know, we have had a lot
of people out and about this morning. I've heard people
on their morning walks again because we're
We're in a beautiful spot just talking about the results.
results last night. Well,
what an interesting night that it turned out to be. Fox's Kaylee
Schuyler live for us there in beautiful Portland, Maine.
So thank you for the report and thank you
for the beautiful view you gave us today, Kaylee. We appreciate it.
