Ellermann bombs are telling us to expect a large solar flare.
Emerging sunspot 4136 is sparkling
with dozens of compact explosions.
Researchers call them Ellermann bombs.
You can see them here,
the little white specks throughout the sunspot group.
Named after physicist Ferdinand Ellermann,
who studied them in the early 20th century,
Ellermann bombs were magnetic explosions about one millionth
as powerful as a true solar flare.
A single Ellermann bomb releases about
126 herbs of energy equal to about 100,000 World War
II atomic bombs, not nuclear bombs, atomic bombs.
In trying to explain the element bombs,
they're usually explained as points of magnetic reconnection near
a sunspot that are less intense and smaller in extent than the sunspot.
Element bombs are observed to form in magnetic field configurations
with close and opposite polarity which is suspected to be a point
of magnetic reconnection in the low solar atmosphere.
More specifically, the sparkling action of element bombs
is a sign of magnetic complexity in a sunspot.
Opposite polarities bump together, reconnect, and then boom.
A full-sized solar flare may not be far behind.
Yes, when opposite polarities connect, solar flares are formed.
Sunspot AR4136 looks like it's ready to rumble.
So do expect the separate polarities to merge
and create a large solar flare in the near term,
as these Ellermann bombs are a sign of just that.

And get ready for some big solar flares over the next 60 to 90 days.
