This is Oak Village, a senior residence on Detroit's west side,
and inside we're going to introduce you to Carol Simpson.
She's an Army veteran who has had three strokes,
and at one point she was staying at a homeless shelter,
sleeping on chairs, until a connection
with VOA Michigan changed her life.
And when I got up to move off the couch,
I could not stand, I could not walk.
They had to call the ambulance.
It was like something that you would see in a movie, I'd say.
What did they say was wrong with you?
I was starting to suffer another stroke.
All in all, I've had three strokes.
It's good to see you sitting here, smiling.
When you got the keys here at Oak Village, after living in the shelter,
being in the hospital, what was that moment like for you?
Happy. Happy that I could be living here.
Still needing help, but I had the roof over my head.
God took mercy.
He blessed Mr. White to help get a place for me.
Carol is my unofficial grandmother.
You know, she's my unofficial grandmother.
Like, I just, once I seen that she was in her situation, I did.
I worked overtime.
I worked hard just to make sure that she was okay.
So, how did you get connected with the VOA?
I got connected with them when I was at the shelter.
Carol Simpson, she was staying in a homeless shelter
and unfortunately they only had chairs
available for her to sit in and so we ended up putting
her in our emergency housing assistance
program at the Comfort Inn.
So she was in a chair?
Sleeping in a chair, yes, at 80 years old.
Someone who's served our country, and she's going through
a situation where she doesn't even have a bed to sleep in.
What goes through your mind?
It's extremely unfortunate, right?
Because people risk their lives for the country.
And to be in a state to where you can't even provide for yourself,
it's unfortunate.
When you see her smile, I see it brings a smile to your face.
What kind of emotions do you go through?
Go through it.
I'm ecstatic, right?
Between now and Veterans Day,
we're going to share many other stories of veterans
and their connection with VOA Michigan as a part
of the Make Camo Your Cause initiative.
On Detroit's West Side, I'm Brandon Hudson, Fox 2 News.
