About 60 French military personnel departed Istres Air Base in southern France on Friday morning to take part in a multinational military exercise in Poland aimed at preparing European forces for a possible deployment to Ukraine after hostilities end. According to Associated Press at the air base, soldiers made final preparations for their departure, checking equipment and organizing military cargo for transport. The exercise, known as Koalicja, is led by France and Britain and will bring together 2,800 troops from 10 European countries. It aims to test how quickly forces can deploy and coordinate operations as part of a potential mission to support Ukraine. "Their mission is to participate in Exercise Koalicja, which aims to test how quickly this multinational force can be deployed once hostilities have ceased on the eastern front," said Lieutenant Colonel Nicolas, commander of the Air Transit and Reception Squadron at Istres Air Base. The exercise marks the first military rehearsal for the Multinational Force for Ukraine, backed by France and Britain as part of the Coalition of the Willing, a group of 37 countries supporting Kyiv. If a ceasefire is reached, the force could help rebuild and strengthen Ukraine's armed forces, provide security guarantees to help reopen the country's airspace and support mine-clearing operations in the Black Sea. But the proposed mission faces significant challenges, including stalled peace negotiations, uncertainty over U.S. support and political questions surrounding France's presidential election next year. Countries involved in the initiative have said their forces would only deploy to Ukraine after hostilities have ceased. Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion on Feb. 24, 2022, France has been one of Ukraine's staunchest military, diplomatic and economic supporters in Europe. It is also training and equipping what will become a full brigade of Ukrainian soldiers for front-line deployment.
