A federal judge has barred the Trump administration from beginning
any construction work on President Trump's triumphal arch.
Yeah, this news coming down just hours ago after
the National Capital Planning Commission approved the project.
Let's get back to Mel, back in Arlington,
with details that seem to be changing by the day. Mel?
Yeah.
So this is just a brief reprieve.
The temporary restraining order blocks the administration,
the National Park Service, from beginning any construction
or preparation work here at Memorial Circle just for the next 14 days.
You know, protest groups,
they gathered once again yesterday here at Memorial Circle
to watch and participate
in the final approval meeting that was held online.
Despite more than nine hours of public comments, most in opposition,
The National Capital Planning Commission gave...
President Trump's arch project,
the green light, in an eight to four vote.
President Trump's appointees to the commission hold the majority.
They say the arch will honor veterans,
celebrate America and become a major tourist attraction.
Opponents said the unobstructed views across
the Memorial Bridge to Arlington Cemetery
were meant to symbolize the reunification of the country.
Here's some of that debate.
And I also want to say that this arch does
not represent partisanship or politics.
The courage of those who serve,
the sacrifices of those who never came home,
and in a greater sense, the triumph of the American spirit.
This arch would dishonor America, our ideals and our laws.
We should honor the 250th anniversary
of the Declaration of Independence by upholding
the rights of the American people and their
votes on Tuesday night,
rather than indulging a president who thinks he is a king.
Construction crews were set to move in as soon
as the approvals and permits were given.
The plan calls for job site trailers,
light towers, generators, tower cranes, forklifts,
drill rigs, and concrete pumping systems.
Work would be year-round, 20 hours a day, for more than three years.
Now, the judge did find substantial risk
of immediate harm if that construction were allowed
to begin.
Representative Don Beyer,
who represents this area of Arlington, also said that they need
to stay vigilant on...
And he says Congress needs to move forward with a law
to prevent these sorts of presidential projects from happening.
We'll send it back to you, Marissa.
