I was driving down the road, and I saw this storage cube,
and it was free, and I knew I could give it a better life.
So I grabbed it, took it over to my shop,
but then I noticed immediately that it got some scratch up on the sides
and the top and on the bottom.
So, first thing I did was grab some scrap 2x4s,
and I cut two pieces to the exact same length as the storage cube.
Next step, lay them on my workbench,
and I'm going to pick up the storage cube and put it on top.
This is going to be a new base that's going to give it some strength.
I did pre-drill up and down before I put the screws in.
What that does is when you pre-drill, it keeps the wood from splitting,
and also makes it easier for the screws to go in.
I use some black screws because
then it matches the finish of the storage tube.
Once I get these screws in,
the next step is I want to build it a new base and I'm going to use
a trim board, a one by four to do it.
I'm going to miter the sides on each end. And what that
means to miter is to put a 45 degree angle on.
And then I'm going to use my Brad nailer to put
these on. The next step is to go ahead
and start working on the top because remember,
we want to start covering up those scratches.
So I cut some boards and I'm going to put those on.
Now, you can put some wood glue down if you want,
which is a good idea, which I did.
And then I also took that brad nailer
and I'm going to put those nails in at an angle
because it makes it stronger.
You don't need a lot because that glue can dry really nice.
Then I took a smaller board, cut again some miter ends,
and I went ahead and brad nailed that around the top.
It's going to make it look really good.
The next step is to take a little bit of some scrap boards
And I'm going to take these little quarter inch gussets that we got
and I'm going to use a stapler and put these together.
And then I got some cane webbing.
This is really easy to work with. It's really easy to cut.
I got that frame that I did.
I'm going to take the cane webbing.
I'm going to cut it into a square.
It's just going to be a little bit bigger than the frame itself.
Again, I'm going to go back to my stapler and staple it down.
You can use hot glue if you want.
Now, once I got that all done, I'm turning it around,
and I'm going to put a handle on.
So I got to drill through for the screws.
I had this handle that was extra from another project.
Once I got that put on, it looks super cool.
I love the look of it.
But once I got that on, it's now time to put some hinges on.
These are really easy with simple screws to put in.
I'm going to put this door on the middle.
Now, you can put as many as you want,
but once I got this door on, guess what?
It's time to put it in place, and look at that.
It's got a brand-new top.
It's got a door in the middle
and a brand-new base, and it's time to decorate.
Here it is, and it looks absolutely awesome.
I love the look of it.
I hope this inspired you to do your own upcycling
with any furniture you can get.
