First responders in Munkton were called
to the waterfront just before 9.30 a.m. on Friday morning
to report that a vehicle had gone into the Petitcodiac River.
Kodiak Regional RCMP said in a press release that they were working
to determine whether there was a person in the vehicle.
Police said the vehicle went into the river between the 100 block
of Assumption Boulevard and the Gunningsville Bridge.
The scene encompassed a parking lot between the Rogers TV building
and an apartment building,
where it appears the vehicle veered towards the river.
Police, ambulances and firefighters from Moncton,
Riverview and Dieppe were on scene,
with a helicopter circling overhead and Zodiac boats
and dive teams in the water to try and locate the vehicle,
a task made more difficult by the high tide.
More than three hours later as the tide was going back out,
the vehicle, a silver SUV,
was recovered a few hundred meters upstream
from where it entered the water. One person was found
deceased inside the vehicle
and police say their investigation is ongoing. RCMP have
not released any information identifying the deceased
or what may have caused the incident.
