Two Bradenton police officers are hurt tonight
and one is in the hospital with a traumatic brain injury.
They were both hit by a car that investigators say
was being used as a weapon.
We're told the situation started as a call for help
from employees at Wawa early this morning.
Fox 13's Kimberly Quezon tells us how the officers
were trying to de-escalate a situation that turned violent.
A call about a man harassing customers
with a gun brought officers to this Wawa at 3:20 in the morning.
Our mission was simply to de-escalate
and make sure that everything was going to be okay
and that people's tempers were calmed down
and everybody goes on about their day.
Bradenton Police say two officers
approached 35-year-old DeJarian Murray,
wanting to talk to him and find out what was happening.
But instead of talking...
BPD says Murray used his car as a weapon willingly
and at a high rate of speed he backed in to our officers.
A senior patrol officer was hospitalized in the ICU
with a traumatic brain injury while the other officer sustained
a lower body injury as Murray drove away.
Two other officers fired back.
It just continued from there to
include getting additional law
enforcement agencies involved in
the pursuit of the suspect.
Bradenton police say Murray drove
to the Skyway Bridge and then
turned back around.
He was pursued by Branton Police,
the Florida Highway Patrol,
and the Manatee County Sheriff's Office
before he crashed at 1st Street and 10th Avenue West.
The FDLE is investigating the officer-involved shooting
while BPD's thoughts remain with their fellow brothers
who were answering a call for help.
We're always going to have each other's backs.
Unfortunately, two of our officers are suffering right now
and two additional officers are...
You know, facing the reality of having fired
at a suspect all for something that at least
At the onset, it seemed like a routine call for service.
Murray faces a number of charges,
including violation of probation, hit and run,
and aggravated battery
on a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon.
From Bradenton, Kimberly Quezon, Fox 13 News.
Kimberly, thanks.
Murray has a lengthy criminal record
that includes charges of reckless driving,
tampering with evidence, child neglect,
possession of cocaine, and much more.
Meanwhile, Bradenton police say they're waiting
to release body camera video because it's disturbing
and out of courtesy to the injured officer
who remains in critical condition.
