Why are you crying in so much pain?
It's like we all women, we all experienced this before.
Yeah, and then the mother-in-law, the same thing she said.
She's like, no, no, no, no c-section, no c-section.
Hello, welcome to S&T Chats.
Today, we bring you another video as part of the relationship series.
Should women have the choice to make a decision in regards how they give birth to their baby?
So the reason why I want to bring this up is because in China a few years ago,
it wasn't the case.
Like if a woman wanted to have a c-section for whatever reason,
the husband or the husband's mom, the in-law will need to give approval first.
They have to sign the consent for a c-section.
Yes, yes.
And this was until 2017.
So it's crazy because, you know, I guess in America,
we just take it for granted that, you know, it's the woman giving birth.
Like we have a right to whatever, however we want to give birth, right?
I don't think it's because you would think naturally,
like automatically that you yourself have the right to decide whether you want to
have a c-section or you want to do it naturally as the woman, as the mom yourself.
And it doesn't have to be the baby's dad.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's kind of crazy.
Yeah, that's crazy.
So what happened in 2017 is there's a lady called Ma Rong Rong.
She was in the hospital because of some complicated reasons.
She was in pain and she couldn't give birth right away.
So then she was in labor for a really long time and the baby's head was too big.
So like it wouldn't, it couldn't come out.
I think she tried natural birth.
Okay.
And she was in so much pain.
She begged like multiple times.
She begged her husband and her in-law.
Yes.
Multiple times to say, hey, like, can you please give approval for me to get a c-section?
Like I'm in so much pain, please give approval.
And then?
And then they said no.
Yeah.
Why?
I think the popo, the mother-in-law said that c-section babies are not smart.
Like natural birth babies are smart.
I think this is a, it's a really common saying in China.
It's a common notion in China.
Yeah.
There's a drama by Liu Yifei.
Yeah, that's her name.
Liu Yifei.
It's called Meigui de Gu Shi.
And in that drama, she gets married, has a baby and the same thing happened to her as well.
She was in so much pain.
She wanted to get a c-section.
The husband was like, oh, zai ran yi ran, zai ran yi ran.
It's like bear for a bit longer, bear it in.
And then the mom outside was like, tong shenme tong, wengbo duo jingli zhige ma, duo shenme teng.
It's like, why are you crying in so much pain?
It's like we all women, we all experienced this before.
Yeah.
And then the mother-in-law, the same thing she said.
She's like, no, no, no, no c-section, no c-section.
Like the baby's going to be dumb if we do c-section.
So she ended up having to do like, thankfully, like after like a couple hours,
I don't know, I forgot how long it was.
The baby, like she pushed so hard and the baby came out.
But yeah, that was played in the drama too.
So it must, yeah, it's an actual thing.
Yeah.
Obviously in the drama, Liu Yifei, the character, Meigui, like she gave birth.
But this girl, this lady, Ma Rongrong, she jumped off the fifth floor.
Yeah.
Of the hospital and suicide because she was in so much pain.
Yeah.
And she couldn't just handle it anymore.
And then because of what she did,
then the Chinese government came out with a law that says,
hey, women now have the authority to make their own decisions
on how they give birth to their child.
But I'm really confused because at least right now,
the current state and Chinese hospitals and stuff,
like their doctors encourage all want c-section.
Why?
Money.
Yeah.
So right now, most Chinese births are all done c-section.
So they went from one extreme to the other extreme.
Right.
Like crazy.
But I feel like it all benefits one party, right?
So the no c-section benefits the in-laws.
It's like, you know, that crazy old notion about how if it's a c-section,
the kids won't be as smart.
And then the other side of, yes, c-section benefits one party,
which is earning money.
Yeah, the hospital, the doctors.
Yeah.
So either side, it doesn't benefit the woman,
the person that's actually giving birth.
I think maybe before this thing happened,
like the hospital wasn't getting paid as much for c-section.
So they were like, okay, the guy has to decide, you know?
And then after this thing, you know, became,
then, you know, people get into the loophole and be like,
okay, then we got, if we have to do, you know,
most people are going to do this.
We're going to take advantage of this and make more money off of it.
Yeah, because now like, I would say 9 out of 10 births in China are all c-section.
Wow.
Yes.
Yeah.
That's a lot.
Everyone's c-section.
Whoa.
They don't even like tell you to like go natural.
C-section.
Planned us.
Easy.
Yeah.
Oh, wow.
Yeah.
Well, women should have their own choice.
Basically, it's like, I don't,
what I don't understand the most about the Chinese government is
it's the woman that's in pain.
It's the woman that's giving birth.
It's like, why should the woman not have authority
or the decision to make that decision?
Yeah, I don't understand that part.
Yeah.
I think maybe because the dad is the head of the household.
That's why in China?
Back then?
No?
I guess.
I don't know.
It's just so weird.
You have to, before Ma Rong Rong did what she did,
women will need to beg to get a c-section.
Because they have to have the husband's consent.
Signature.
I feel so bad.
Like that's crazy.
I feel like it shouldn't be either extremes.
Every human being, regardless you're a man or a female,
should have their own right of choosing what you want to do.
To your body.
And I think also doctors should also give you the opportunity
to choose as well and not pressure you to do a certain way.
Because I do know in America, a lot of hospitals,
a lot of doctors actually pressure you into a lot of stuff.
Yes.
Like I've experienced it myself.
Yeah, me too.
It's like pressure to the point that you just feel really uncomfortable.
Yep.
So I don't like that about the American hospital system about it.
I guess maybe because it was just that one doctor.
Maybe not all doctors are like that.
But I think every person should have their own choice
to do whatever you want to do with your body.
Because it is your body.
Yeah.
So definitely not right for the beginning part
where the guy has to set the consent.
I'm like, it's not even your body.
What are you?
Yeah, I don't get that.
So the answer to our question is,
yes, women should have the power to decide how they want to give birth.
Yeah, of course.
It is your own body.
You know, they know it best.
And it's a no-brainer.
Yeah.
It's a no-brainer.
And I don't think the husband should pressure you
to do what he thinks is best for the baby.
Because he doesn't experience it.
Yeah.
He doesn't know what it's like giving birth.
Yeah.
He doesn't know what it's like to carry a baby for nine months.
Actually, you know what?
I read something.
I think I read something in America that this woman also wanted a C-section.
But the guy was like, no, because it's going to cost a lot more.
Because epidural obviously costs a couple thousand.
And a C-section costs a lot more than a natural birth in America.
And I think I remember reading something like this.
Yep.
So this also is a problem in America.
Just a little bit different, I think.
Yeah, I think if the woman actually wanted to do C-section, she probably could.
But, you know, because the husband, the family, you know that.
Yeah, I actually read something like this.
A woman, she obviously, I think she got a divorce after that.
But yeah, the husband's like, no, you know, it's going to cost so much more.
Oh, and I think she did.
And she did get a divorce.
No, no, no.
She did get a C-section.
OK.
And then the husband's like, oh, since you chose to do the C-section,
you have to pay this part of the bill.
Oh, God.
Like you have to pay for the epidural.
You have to pay for the blah, blah, blah, you know.
Yeah.
Yes.
Crazy.
Oh, my goodness.
What kind of guy is that?
Yeah, because he was like, you chose to do that.
Crazy.
So women always have your own stack of finance somewhere.
Yes.
Yeah.
Well, that's crazy.
I hope none of you guys ever, never, ever experienced any of this.
Yes.
Crazy, crazy.
Yeah.
Crazy people out there everywhere.
What a world.
I know, right?
I think it's because people are just so selfish.
Yeah.
Centered and selfish.
Yeah.
Gotta be less selfish.
Yep.
Okay.
That's it for today.
That's it for today's video.
