I have been dying to upgrade our builder grade fireplace ever since we moved in 18 months ago and I finally got the guts to do it! So we completely ripped off the old one and built ours from scratch.
I'm not going to write everything down here but if you have any questions please comment and I'll try to help!

So I don't have a total plan for this fireplace yet,
but all I know is that I just want it a little bit
to be more, to be more.
A little chunkier, less gray tile.
I don't know, do you want to try and take the tile off
and just see?
Mmm.
And just like that, demolition is pretty much complete,
depending on what we decide to do with this thing.
All right, we have a plan for the fireplace.
Zach's running to Home Depot to get drywall
and to get some MDF boards.
We're gonna build out our legs and top of our fireplace
out of MDF board, but first we have to replace the drywall.
So that's step number one, and we're gonna cut
and build our fireplace, and then we're going
to put some tile on the front.
So it's gonna be a process, but I'm really excited.
When they say it gets dusty, they mean it.
Third time's a charm.
Guys, we are learning all kinds of lessons
with this table saw rental.
Lesson number one is that they don't work.
Just kidding, it works, it's just,
the whole point is that it has this fence
that keeps you straight, and this one doesn't lock
into place, and so we have to lock it ourselves
with some clamps that we have.
But I'm guessing that's just how rentals are
at these home improvement stores.
So anyway, there's that, but we figured it out, it's fine.
We got two of these big MDF boards,
and we're cutting them down to all of our different slats
that we need for all the different strips
we need for the mantel.
I'll link all the good YouTube videos that we watched.
There's a couple that were just really helpful.
But yeah, it's been really fun.
All the kids are inside watching a movie.
I'm paying the older kids to babysit the baby.
So, that's how life is around here.
Okay, so we're finished with the big, long length cuts.
That was really fun, working with the table saw.
So now we're setting up the miter saw
to do the shorter cuts.
All right, so we did all of our cuts, yay!
I think, maybe?
We still need to do the boot cuts and things, though.
Or I guess just all the trim.
Yeah.
But these are our main box builds.
We've got two legs, a middle, and a top shelf.
So that's what these are.
Now we can start assembling our boxes.
The trim for the fireplace.
We have a lot of really good selections.
Brady is having a wonderful time.
Brady, you okay there?
You doing okay?
Bo's having fun, too.
And yeah, so we'll see what we can come up with.
Trying to keep it simple,
but trying to have it be beautiful at the same time.
Hello.
Okay, we're now at Home Depot,
getting some tile and paint.
And the only way we're doing this
is because we got suckers for the kids.
Bo, show us your sucker.
Yummy.
And Brady is just a total mess.
Carson's being good, too.
But yeah, we're trying to pick out tile,
and there's lots of really good options,
and a lot of them are in stock,
so that's really helpful.
All right, we're back from Home Depot.
It was very successful.
The boys were great,
and we got all the trim we wanted.
So we have a crown molding for under the top shelf,
and we have a little cove piece.
I'm not sure where it is.
And we have a cap for the bottom baseboard of the legs.
We're very excited.
We're pumped.
We're fed.
We got some Wendy's.
We had a good couple laughs along the way.
We spent all of our money,
and now we're ready to go.
We also got the paint that we need,
and we got a sprayer.
So very excited,
hoping to get it,
all the trim on,
and painted,
and installed today,
so we can tile tomorrow.
And yeah, so let's do it.
All right, so we're in the middle
of putting on our crown molding,
and it is seriously so tricky.
It just drives us nuts.
And so we finally figured out
what this middle piece needed to be.
But, and we figured out,
we figured it all out,
but just a little too late.
In fact, two inches too late.
We need literally two more inches,
which actually is more than that,
because it's like a diagonal inch.
And we need to be able to work with it in the sun.
So we need like,
just a little bit more.
All we need is this little piece right here,
and then the same matching piece on this side.
So annoying.
And the place we got it at is like 20 minutes away.
So off he goes to get us a couple more inches,
so we can finish it.
It's a learning experience.
Huh, I think.
Learning experience.
Crown molding, not easy.
Not for the faint of heart.
But it does look really good.
It does look really good.
It's gonna be awesome.
We're very excited.
We have popped it.
We wiped it,
we sanded it,
we filled in all the little nail holes.
We are ready to paint this thing.
Very excited, very excited.
It's only 10 o'clock at night.
A little humid out here,
so I hope it doesn't get too cold.
It doesn't take forever to dry.
We're trying to get the primer coats finished tonight,
so then we can just come out
and bust out the two paint coats tomorrow.
We're using Simply White by Benjamin Moore.
It's the same color as my walls.
I don't know if it's weird to have same wall color,
same fireplace color.
I don't know.
True Coat 360 VSP.
I'm sure you've heard of this.
All of the Instagram DIYers use this one.
We kind of like to get a new tool
whenever we do a big project,
and so this was kind of our new tool for this project.
Very excited.
We're gonna try it out
and hopefully get this done way faster
than what it would be with a brush or a roller.
We're gonna sand between each primer coat,
and we're gonna wait the proper amount of time
for drying and everything,
so I'm gonna be a good girl this time
and do all, stick to the rules.
This is ridiculous.
Best thing ever.
♪ Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey ♪
It's dry.
It's so beautiful.
I'm just really surprised by us.
It just turned out really, really good.
Can't believe it.
And it's so smooth.
It's got that nice, smooth finish
that you see on store-bought things
that I've never been able to achieve in any painting.
painting. It just looks really, really good. It's that spray painter. It's so legit. Okay,
we're going to move it inside. Oh, it looks so pretty. Doesn't it look pretty? Everyone
together, say, ooh. That's it. That's perfect. Can you just lift it up? What? Oh, I guess
your feet. Tiling now, and it's looking so good. It's a little tricky. We've never tiled
before, so I went with a bigger tile so we didn't have as much cutting and stuff to do.
I don't know. Maybe it's the same amount of cutting. We're learning and we're figuring it out.
Here's the tile saw. It runs like water over the blade so that it doesn't get too hot.
And this is just a saw. Just cuts the tile.
You got your glasses on?
Last piece.
We finished our tile, and I think it looks pretty great.
We don't know anything about styling as far as what little veins should go next to what,
but I feel like we did an okay job, and it looks really good.
Guys, we are so excited about how this fireplace turned out. It looks really beautiful after we
put it in place and got the tile finished. It was a really fun project and pretty difficult.
There was a lot of new things that we didn't know that we had to learn, and it was a bit tricky,
but it was really fun learning how to do it. You just watch all the YouTube videos on how to do
things. There's something for anything you want to learn on YouTube. Anyway, we hope you guys
liked our video. Thanks for watching. We hope that it encourages you to do your own projects,
