This is Mo Norman's tee drill that literally helps you hit the drives of your
life. I'm not saying that. I'm just repeating one of the comments,
one of my lessons of the day,
because we were learning to keep that club face squarer for longer.
This will make sense so much in just a short while. So hi,
welcome to the channel.
I'm Alex Elliott and I'm a top 50 world coach and your home of simple golf tips.
Think of this as five times a week,
five minute videos that are really going to help you improve your goal. Simple.
Well, it's the only way forward, right? Nice and simple.
How to set this up one and a half club heads in front.
All I want you to do is put two tee pegs in the ground just like that.
Now, if you're at a driving range,
just replace these tee pegs for coins or rubber tee pegs,
just something that's going to feel like it's a game.
So the concept is as you strike that golf ball away,
can we feel as though that club face stays squarer for that length of time?
Think about it. It happens quickly and most of us sort of rapid over.
It's already closed by this point or come through and our club face is still
open at this point, essentially causing big hooks or big slices.
This is how you're going to achieve it. Now, Mo Norman, Ben Hogan,
were arguably the two best ball strikers that were definitely in my opinion,
like way ahead of their time.
So how I think you can practice this and bring this into your golf game is
firstly, just move that ball off the tee peg, but keep that tee in the ground.
So just gives you a few goes before you hit some away.
What I think was the best thing about what Mo Norman was saying was that he was
really active with this body. And again,
quite sort of passive with these hands for that golf club to feel like it stays
squarer for longer.
We have a bigger chance of having that club face to point where we want it to go.
Right? Think about it logically. If this club face is constantly changing,
we're sort of a bit of guesstimation on how we hit it straight.
If we get it squarer for longer,
this is how we're going to keep our club face in a chance of hitting it better,
longer and straighter. So how I want you to bring it in,
put your left hand on the golf club.
I want you to do your trail hands and my right hand as a right-handed player,
place it like that, where our middle finger is on the side of the golf club.
I want you just to make some half swings. I'll repeat that again.
Some half swings to here and through feeling as though you really concentrate on
keeping that club face pointing square for that one and a half club heads.
Watch this really, really watch this closely.
I'm not spinning it off, not spinning it under,
keeping it square through that gate.
I'm being dynamic with the body and to achieve that I'm going to have to be that
way. I can't be like this. I can't be this way.
As I said, look at that.
So all we need to do is do three to 10 reps for me.
Some people might need three, some people might need 10.
Whatever you feel is most comfortable to really attain that feeling of that club
face being square for longer.
And you should feel as though that left wrist is staying flatter through impact.
You should feel as though your hips are opening up.
These are all bits of feedback that drill helps you achieve.
I don't think a lot of golfers realise, and I didn't myself,
and I would probably argue some of the competitors Mo Norman was up against
didn't realise this. That's why he was so far ahead of himself,
ahead of time is that when we're swinging down,
how we release the club, a lot of us sort of throw it away early.
And if you throw it away early,
our ability to keep that club face square for longer is reduced because our body
has to stop to help you find the golf club.
Equally if our club face is wide open, we have to throw these hands at it.
Again, our club face is not square for longer.
So if you're practising that where you've got the club face square at this last
parallel position and you're dynamic with the body,
the right shoulders working down,
look how you can keep it square for that club head and a half through.
Vitally important impacts over in a flash.
Therefore if you can feel like that over in a flash,
the club face is squarer for longer, that's how you're going to hit it straighter.
Okay. Three shots coming up.
I'm going to hit three and show you how good this drill actually is.
So here we go. Shot one. Look how straight that was.
Started a little bit down the right wing and just stayed there hitting the right
half of the fairway.
I definitely feel on each and every one of these shots and here's in shot two now
that I felt as though my hips are opening.
I was quite dynamic with those hips and my club face was squarer for longer.
That foot,
that club head and a half through impact was definitely something that I was
really focusing on and almost like the only thing I was focusing on onto the
final shot here.
The driver a little bit of a draw on this one because I got it a little bit out
the toe, but essentially still a good shot.
We're not gonna be perfect every time,
but this drill definitely encourages you to be more dynamic.
Keep the club face square for longer. And one thing that I would say,
if you lose that feeling,
go back to that palm aspect of the drill to really regain it and something you
could probably build into your pre-shot routine.
Also, I know a lot of you will go, Alex, can I use this with irons?
Of course you can try the same drill with all your irons and see how good it is.
Thanks so much for watching.
I know it's going to really help you and don't forget to subscribe if you
enjoyed the video.
