Wild Camping in the English Mountains

Hello everyone, we've come out camping today, it's the Jubilee Bank holiday weekend,
we're in the wonderful Lake District, just underneath the Fairfield Range, that's where
we're going to head up into today and hopefully wild camp somewhere on the other side I think,
maybe Grisedale Tarn. So yeah, beautiful day, the sun's out, weather forecast looks decent,
we'll see how we get on.
So you've got Dove Crag up there, now on the side of Dove Crag there's a cave called the
Priest's Hole, I believe, well a priest used to live in there or spend a lot of time in there at
least. Now not many folk knew about it, it's not easy to spot, but it was featured on a program
about, I think it was about 15-20 years ago now, called like 10 hidden places in Britain,
and obviously it didn't remain hidden for long, and most of the times that I've been up this way
there's someone in it, and I don't think you'll ever get it to yourself on a weekend. Pretty busy
place but I'm not interested in sleeping in a cave to be honest, especially if it's busy,
you come here to get away from people not to kind of crawl into a small space and sleep next to them.
So just to the right hand side when you come up here you can see just there is an old ruin,
looks like a shepherd's hut or a herder's hut, but it's pretty derelict. I have seen people
camping there before, the walls are a couple of feet high so it's enough to give you some
shelter in bad weather. It's brutal this bit, I used to call it the devil's staircase,
but there's one in Scotland called that, so I call it the Satan's staircase now,
which is probably a more accurate description of it. But we've just passed a couple of lads there
who went to sleep in the priest's hall last night, but they arrived late and there was
already four other people in there, so they slept outside in the tent. It's crazy, crazy
how popular it's become, but it's a hell of a mooch up here.
