Good afternoon everyone, Cappy here. A lot of you have been asking me
where did I get that overhead kind of console thing in my Jeep. I didn't buy it, I built it,
and today Todd and I are going to show you how to easily build this console on a very low cost.
So hang around.
So one of the first things you're going to need is, now we get this at Princess Auto.
It's a store here in Alberta, very famous to a lot of off-roaders and,
you know, do-it-yourself guys. So this is the metal aluminum pegboard. Now you can get the
big ones that are 16 by 32, but this is a 32 by 3 inch pegboard as you can see. Now this thing is
great because you can do a lot of things to this where you can cut it down to the size you need,
and we're going to attach a plate on this back piece here that will attach to the
speaker plastic header, and you can accessorize anything you want on here. It's got pre-drilled
holes so you can bolt things on, you can add your microphone hold. For me, I added my like a ram
mount, and then you can do other things like radios or a light, anything you want, and it's
super simple and inexpensive. To speed up the install, Todd had pre-sprayed the pegboard
with bed liner spray the night before. Now because these come in in a 32 inch length,
we need to cut this to a 30 inch length to fit between the speaker header to the front where
that locking bracket is to take the freedom top off. So what you're going to do is you're going
to measure 30 inches, make a line which works perfectly because it's in between two bolts,
two rows of bolts, you're going to cut that right off. So you're going to take that chunk,
throw it away, and that will be the rest, and we'll show you what goes next. Now remember to
always do a dry fit because depending on the year of your jeep, mine's a 2018, so mine's slightly
different than Todd's. His is a 2012. So when we cut this piece off and we go towards the front of
that plastic bulkhead, he has to cut these off a little bit by 45 degrees to make it fit a little
bit better. Mine was fine because it was completely flat, so things are a little bit different on the
years of your jeep. So dry fit first before you commit 100 percent. Todd, get cutting buddy!
To avoid any sharp edges, give the cut a quick file. Okay, so here's the best part.
Your hardware to mount this. All you're going to need is one black drywall screw
and four black self-tapping screws with the flat head on them. That's it. Then you accessorize
anything you want, but I recommend you accessorize everything you want before you put the final piece
up on top. It'll be a lot easier for you. So plan that out first, get all your nuts and bolts, all
your accessories mounted on there, and when then you're ready, just put it right in there and we'll
show you exactly how to do this. The other piece you're going to need is an eight inch straight
bracket, the ones with the four holes pre-tapped in it. We sprayed it black also, only on the one
side because the back side is going to be up against the plastic header. Now you try and find
the straight bracket that has the holes that are at least semi-close in a straight line. You get
some other brackets that are too wide and all of the holes, they're just way too spaced out. That
will not work. So try and find the plate just like this. That's all you need. A couple coats of bedliner
spray. We're good to go to the next step. So now what we're going to do is we're going to take that
eight inch plate on the back part here that you did not cut off. We're going to drill this plate.
Don't forget to go backwards because you want the black to be shown on the outside.
And don't don't drop it. Touch it up afterwards.
Is that the same as yours? What have you decided on? Oh, so it's going to be for my radio. Okay,
so you're going to put that at the front, very front. Yep. And then what else did you want to do?
We're going to do the for the that ram mount. Okay, we'll put the ram mount right afterwards.
So we'll get those installed first because we want to get access to the bolts and all that.
So put the radio bracket here and then probably the ram mount bracket around here. So in the future
you can have a ram mount claw system or whatever you want. Perfect. And then later on you can add
whatever you want in here too. So this is what you end up with guys. You got this nice little
bracket here. So when it's upside down, it's going to be, it's kind of hard to show you,
but when it's upside down, you can have this nice black look. Now, one of the things we're
going to have to do because your speaker header has an angle to it. So what we're going to do is
we're going to find the right angle. This will have to be bent a little bit to get that perfect
angle, but everything else is going to work out just great. Don't worry about painting the inside
because no one's going to see that anyway. Cool. Here we are now. We did the angle bent
for his speaker header. We had to make a measurement because of his bracket for his radio,
CB radio. We have to make sure that the third hole in the middle is not used by any accessory
because this is the hole that we're going to drill the drywall screw into your freedom top
lock handle. Yes, guys, you will have to drill a tiny hole with the drywall screw,
but you know what? It's a Jeep. We're always putting holes in our Jeeps. Right, guys?
So you're happy with that? Oh, yeah. We're happy with that. Okay. Okay. So here's what we've done.
So think of this upside down like this above your head. We've got the ram mount over here
and his radio brackets right here so he can actually angle his radio to be facing him a
little bit better if he wants to just like that. So that's what we've chosen right now is to have
just the CB radio and a ram mount for future accessories here, and then he can accessorize
whatever he wants here, too. The great thing about this, it's magnetic. So if you have anything
that's strong and it has a magnet, it'll clap right on. Super cool. Now, because we don't plan
on removing the freedom tops, we had no issues drilling the overhead console to the handle.
But if it's an issue for you, you'll have to plan a different method to attach it to the front.
One, two, third hole grabs the center of this locking handle for your freedom top
perfectly. Now let's do the back. Once again, bring it down just a touch.
Are you happy? I'm very happy. Perfect. All right, let's get the CB radio mounted.
So the bracket for Princess Auto was what? $14.99? It was actually $9.99 on sale. Oh wow, good. And
then that little bracket I got was $3.69. Yeah, so taxes... So you're like a $20 little mod you
just did. Yep. And it's going to be like a game changer just because this is a little bit better
out of the way for me. Now I can put my phone up here once I get the rest of the RAM and it'll be
perfect. Plus all my mods. And it's magnetic, too, right? So it works. And you're thinking about
putting some mats up there, too, in between there? I'm going to have a mat maybe up in here, a mat
cubby, and maybe some flashlight holders. Cool. Yep. Right on. Thanks, big man. You're welcome, buddy.
So there you have it, guys. We just did a simple $20 mod. You can accessorize a whole bunch of
stuff up there. That's what I did to my Jeep and that's about it. If you like this video, guys,
give it a thumbs up. Be sure to subscribe. And you know what? We hope to do more of these tiny
little mods because we're here to help you guys out. Cheers.
