If you want to begin to move into your own personal greatness,
if you want to begin to really enjoy a happy, successful, healthy life,
you've got to be willing to go against the tide.
You've got to be willing to harness your will, wherever you are,
whatever you're doing, do it with everything that you have.
Develop the habit of giving more than what you're paid for.
Develop the habit of setting standards that others will be measured by.
Someone said, do not go where the path may lead,
but go where there's no path and leave a trail.
No matter who you are, no matter where you are in life,
you can take the lid off of your jaw.
If you're not excited about waking up in the morning,
if you're sitting around bored out of your mind,
if you got time to do everything anybody asks you to do,
you probably got the lid on.
If when you tell your dreams to all your friends,
it makes sense to them, you got your lid on, man.
Your dreams should not make sense to everybody.
You got to say something that make people go, how you going to do that?
That's when you got the lid off.
And if I were you, I'd do that.
I'd take the lid off.
The most important thing is that you have a vision,
that you have a goal.
Because without that vision and without that goal,
again, you're drifting around and you're never going to end up anywhere.
People don't become successful just by accident.
So you got to really have a specific goal.
And to me, to have that vision that I want to be Mr. Universe,
that I want to be the greatest bodybuilder of all time.
So that was a great goal.
You have to have a goal.
Now, it doesn't have to be that specific goal,
but it has to have some goal.
We each have a gift.
But too many people miss out
because they refuse to sign the lease on their gift.
You keep looking for it outside of you.
Stop, sit with yourself.
What is it that you do the absolute best with the least amount of effort?
That's your gift.
But if you are constantly looking outside of yourself
and you don't latch on to your gift,
you will never find your purpose.
If you want to succeed,
you must commit to your own gift and embrace it.
If you are extremely talented,
but you're not prepared to practice and rehearse and drill
and fall and fail forward to the next attempt,
you will never make it as a pro.
You will never make as a pro business person.
You'll never make it as a pro husband or wife or athlete or musician.
You just never will.
So just get used to that if you're not prepared to pay the price.
If you are prepared to pay the price
and you have the aptitude and the talent,
now we're talking about there's some real potential here.
And what we don't know is, you know, what's in your heart.
Like what is the fire that stirs you that you wake up saying,
I will do this even when I don't feel like it.
I will do whatever it takes to overcome my temptation for mediocrity,
my temptation for excuses,
my temptation for reasons and circumstances to hold me back.
I won't allow those to be in my way.
And if you have that within you,
you'll achieve whatever you choose.
This is why I always recommend to people,
sit down, take your time,
instead of thinking about what is your goal.
And that can be as crazy as it is.
It could be, you know, I want to impress girls.
If that's your goal, so be it.
But it motivates you.
It could be that you're emulating a certain, you know, bodybuilder,
a certain boxer, whatever it is.
Have those pictures put all over the wall.
Like I did.
I put pictures of boxers and of powerlifters and weightlifters
all over my bedroom wall.
So that every day when I go to sleep,
every day when I wake up,
I look at those pictures and they motivate me.
You need that motivation.
And then therefore you have this kind of imprint in front of you all the time.
And you know exactly what you're chasing.
This is why I always smiled when I was in the gym.
People always came up to me and says,
why are you smiling?
You're working out five hours a day.
You're doing the same as the other guys,
but the other guys have a sour face.
They're pissed off that they have to do another rep or another set or something.
I looked forward to,
I looked forward to another thousand reps of sit-ups.
I looked forward to another 500 pounds of leg press or squat.
I looked forward to doing more and more curls until my arms fall off.
Why?
Because I knew that every rep that I did and every set that I did and more
weights that I lifted,
I get one step closer to turning that vision into reality.
In the process of working on your dreams,
you are going to incur a lot of disappointment,
a lot of failure,
a lot of pain,
a lot of setbacks,
a lot of defeats.
But in the process of doing that,
you will discover some things about yourself that you don't know right now.
What you will realize is that you have greatness within you.
What you'll realize is that you're more powerful than you can ever begin to
imagine.
What you will realize is that you are greater than your circumstances.
And just realize everybody make mistakes and the mistakes you going through
are going to help you become the person you need to be later on.
So when you're young and you make mistakes,
don't let them eat you up.
Because everybody that done made it done made them.
You got to fail in order to win.
To understand how to hit the game when it's shot,
you got to miss the game when it's shot.
I've been studying successful people for a long time.
They all do the same thing.
They all got visions and dreams and goals.
They all written down somewhere.
They all wake up excited about their life.
They all run out of hours in the day because they just can't get it all done
and they can't wait for tomorrow.
Now, if your life ain't like that,
it's because you ain't living your life in the fullest, man.
Now, who problem is that?
It is impossible to be a Maverick or a true original
if you're too well behaved and don't want to break the rules.
You have to think outside the box.
That's what I believe after all.
What is the point of being on this earth?
If all you want to do is be liked by everyone and avoid trouble.
The only way that ever got any place was by breaking some of the rules.
After all, I remember that after I was finished with my bodybuilding career,
I wanted to get into acting and I wanted to be a star in films.
You can imagine what the agent said that it can't be done.
The rules are different here.
Just look at your body.
You have this huge monstrous body and overly developed.
That doesn't fit into the movies.
And the agent also complained about my accent.
And he says, no one ever became a star with an accent like that.
So this is the kind of negative attitude they had.
But I didn't listen to those rules, even though they were very nice.
And they said, look, we can get you some good parts.
We can make I get you to be a, you know, playing a wrestler.
Oh, maybe we did German accent.
We can get you to be a Nazi officer in Hogan's Heroes or something like that.
But, you know, I didn't listen to all this.
This were their rules, not my rules.
I was convinced I could do it.
That if I worked as hard as I did in bodybuilding five hours a day and I
started getting to work, I started taking acting classes, took English
classes, took speech classes, dialogue classes.
And finally I broke through.
I broke through and I started getting the first parts in TV, Streets of
San Francisco, pumping arms.
And then I got the big break in Conan the Barbarian.
And there the director said, if we wouldn't have Schwarzenegger, we would
have to build one.
Now think about that.
And then when I did Terminator, I'll be back.
Became one of the most famous lines in a movie history all because of my
crazy accent.
Now think about it.
The things that the agent said will be totally a detriment and will be
impossible for me to get a job all of a sudden became an asset for me.
All of those things, my accent, my body and everything.
So it just shows you never listen that you can't do something.
